even aside from anything else, it doesn't appeal to me. i'd like to have a few days in and around bogota, but that's it. and it's a loooong way to go for that. i'd like to go to ecuador sometime but not right now. 2 or 3 weeks chillin on the beach would do me just fine if i can sort it out.

Edin, just having a think about your question of places I still want to go or would like to go back to.

I've lost my bug for exploring the last few years, so I don't have the drive to get to new places any more, and am happy now just going back to places I know. Places I would like to have got to but didn't include:

-iran (although i've lose interest in that anyway)
-syria (ditto)
-uzbekistan (maybe one day)
-russia, st petes and moscow (maybe one day)
-iceland (maybe one day)
-alaska
-many national parks in the US
-cuba (maybe one day)
-baja california in mexico (maybe one day)
-hawaii
-south korea
-shanghai
-i'd loved to have seen more of zambia
-rwanda
-ecuador
-wouldn't have minded getting to tasmania

think those would be the main ones
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Iran would be amazing - so much beauty in that country but think I’d be put off.
Russia, Cuba and south K would be quality.

Been to a lot of the national parks - they’re grate.

Same about all foods. Not all fats are bad, not all sugars are bad, not all cholesterol is bad.

yeah sure. tanzania aren't keeping count of their covid cases though

in all seriousness though, i've read a few recent hotel reviews on booking, and covid doesn't seem to be an issue on the island. they check your temperature when you get there and otherwise all good to go. the main potential issue seems to be that if flying emirates, you need a PCR test to transfer through dubai on the way out of tanzania. can get one done on the island for $100 though, and anyway there's other routes through addis ababa or muscat.

i travelled to portugal in the first week of april when they had aa national state of emergency, so this looks a piece of cake !

Sounds like you've got it figured out

We've been put off travelling this Christmas in case they change the rules and we can't get back for work.

yeah, sounds sensible tbf

not saying nothing will go wrong with this trip (and am not even sure if im going yet), just think the risks look ok for my situation, and after a couple of recent health issues i think it would do me good if i can sort it out.

Mylo.

I couldn't find my Covid comment but I did find one of the links I based it on. Or close enough, anyway. Well worth a read on the financial realities of the situation:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7361259/

"If we simply assume ten full QALYs for each person, at the UK Treasury's valuation of £60,000 each, that would be worth £240bn (400,000 * 10 * £60,000)."

The author makes a lot of assumptions, and there are undoubtedly other costs associated with lockdown. Mental health issues, suicides etc all go into the negative column. But it's a good starting point to get your head around the numbers involved.

The current projected cost of Covid to the UK is £280bn. If you put in the 500k number that was mentioned when the government was pushing herd immunity you realise they're still in the black by £20bn. Probably enough to cover the 'hidden' costs of lockdown.

FWIW I did this research at the time because I couldn't make sense of what was happening either. Sh!t be crazy.
