We need a better striker than the one we have now. It’s just so naive to say stuff like ‘we don’t provide our strikers with service so why get a new one’ when it’s not as straightforward as that. Better strikers make better runs and perhaps the issue isn’t with our creativity, maybe it’s the strikers we have not making space and movement for any creativity to happen.

If Amorim thinks Gyök is what he needs to help solve our very real issue of scoring goals because the strikers (or even just striker) we have aren’t as good at getting into scoring positions as the guy he’s just managed to great success with then he deserves the benefit of the doubt

We need midfielders who aren't wasteful with the ball.
Full backs or wing backs or whatever the heck you want to call them who know how to do basic stuff like cross a ball, a keeper who knows how to keep out shots and a striker who knows how to tire out defences if he isn't receiving the ball often, and a striker who knows how to head the ball, as well as get into space and make dangerous runs.
Simple stuff.
Currently, we have none of the above.

We need a lot of players but over the years on here I’ve seen the weird argument that just because one position is being potentially filled (in this case a striker) then people say ‘but we need a midfielder, a wing back etc’

Obviously but there are no real preferences. Just get the right players in when we can. It’s not like football manager where you say ‘why spend £80 million on one player when you can get 3 players for that’. Really? What three players and are they available? Are there 3 decent players out there who cost £26.6 million each?

We’ve seen with Zirkhorst what happens when you try and go for the ‘let’s spend non premium amounts on up and coming potential’. You end up buying badly and buying twice.

If we can afford a top striker in Gyök then it’s the least we can do. Having a capable striker will improve us somewhat and then at the end of the season we can focus on other positions as perhaps that’s only when those players are available. The striker is for me the most important player on the pitch.

We would need to offload some deadwood in Jan for that to happen

We do create chances though. And sometimes having poor strikers like we have creates the illusion we don’t create them. If lesser strikers don’t make runs then it seems like it’s dry up there. But we saw - especially towards the end of Ten Hags run there is creativity in the squad.

Here are the facts - Zirkhorst is not good enough and may never play for us again if he goes to Juve as expected. Rashford is done. That leaves us with Hojlund as our only striker and there are many question marks about him.

Scoring goals is the entire point of football and Amorim just had the most prolific striker of 2024 and clearly wants to bring him with him. If we can make it done you’ll be stunned when you suddenly see a top striker making the runs for Bruno that Hojlund isn’t and we’ll magically wake up from this deep sleep where we think young, unproven strikers were ever the answer

Secondly why shouldn’t we ask the manager what he wants? They’re the ones who should have the biggest say as they know better than anyone how their ex players listen to tactical commands etc.

Just because Ten Hag bought a couple of ex player duds shouldn’t put us off the practice of listening to a manager or else we’ll become this ridiculous moneyball type club that has middle managers listening to middle managers listening to middle managers and no one actually having much of a clear view. We’ve already seen the Ashworth shambles.

Yes, make it a committee but in a world where there aren’t many striking options it’s a no brainer taking a chance on a guy like Gyok who openly moved to Sporting to work with Amorim and by all accounts is a model professional and who would hopefully improve us.

Or we could just save money and bring in another Zirkhorst and wonder why we keep not scoring goals
