anything for you andy

During the reign of the 'Catholic Monarchs' Ferdinand and Isabella- and long afterwards- the Inquisition was active in persecuting people for offences such as crypto-Judaism, heresy, Protestantism, blasphemy, and bigamy. The last trial for crypto-Judaism was held in 1818.

In 1492 Ferdinand and Isabella ordered segregation of communities. This led to the creation of closed quarters which eventually resembled what were later called "ghettos". This religious segregation, common at the time, further increased economic pressures upon the Jews and other non-Christians by the increase in taxation and social restrictions. Finally, in 1492, the Alhambra Decree announced that the Jews in Spain were given four months by the monarchs to either convert to Catholicism or leave Spain in exile. Tens of thousands of Jews departed from Spain to other lands such as Portugal, North Africa, Italy and the Ottoman Empire. Later, in 1492, Ferdinand issued a letter- addressed to the Jews who had left Castile and Aragon- which invited them back to Spain if- and only if- they had become Christians. This accession then created a significant difference in the way in which the country was run. This was an important decision as it affected the lives of all the subjects of 'the Catholic monarchs' Ferdinand and Isabella.

Ah Chalres VIII of France. Just been doing about him last week. Hapsburgs were v good. And they had the papal states i think as well as the lowlands and spain. There was a bit of bother when they got spain as they didn't really want it that much. They were just given it
