"the point was though JJG, do people in prison for kissing in public in saudi deserve to be there - and the answer is yes. they broke the law, went to court and were handed down a punishment for it."

That still doesn't mean they deserve to be there. Unless they are habitual offenders or show no signs of remorse they deserve a slap on the wrist.

JJG, the punishment for it in that country is imprisonment, they broke the law, they take the punishment. it's not down to us to tell other countries what their laws should be just because we have laxer morals than they do.

So if they changed the law in Britain to state that you have to walk on your hands everywhere you go, or you face the electric chair, that's fine and dandy with you is it?

if, somehow something as ridiculous got passed as a law, you'd have no choice.

Fred you are making stupid points.

not at all. I would just give up as you are just coming over as more arrogant with every new point you make.

to use a metaphor that was used yesterday - A german gets caught doing 100mph on the motorway in england.... should he be punished?

of course he should. despite the fact he can do those speeds on the autobahns (some of them, at least) he was still speeding in our country.

you obey the laws of the country you are in, or you fall foul of them. simples.

Which still doesn't mean they deserve it. My definition of what is or isn't an appropriate response to a crime doesn't differ depending on what country I'm in.

For example in America it's perfectly acceptable to defend your property with lethal force, doesn't mean if I lived there I'd get a gun and sit by the door waiting for someone to climb in the window.

I'm not saying that ignorant of a crime is an excuse (though I could probably make an argument that it is) and I'm not saying that countries should change their laws to suit my morality. And if you get imprisoned for kissing in public in Saudi Arabia then tough you'll have to do the time unless you can get released through a proper appeals system. But I will never believe that anyone deserves it.

My mam is getting the sack for incompetence and not filling the house with food

If we wern't listening to your points how come we all offered counter arguments?

You seem to be in the mindset of if it's not what you say then it must be wrong and anyone who disagrees just must not be listening to you.

not really making it personal though is it

ok, maybe not 'deserves' but they'll certainly have to accept it, as they broke the law of that land.

as i said, if you go to a foreign country, you abide by their laws, or you fall foul of them and take the punishment that comes with it. whether you agree with it or not.
