We don't need wingers!!!!!!!
It might seem like we don't have any cover for Bale and Lennon but that's just not true at all. When one of them is injured it's not the job of Pienaar or Kranjcar to provide the width and pace, it's BAE and Walker behind them. We have adequate cover for the flanks, no doubt about it. You just can't have another 20M player happy to sit on the bench. You won't get squad players any better than Pienaar and Kranjcar, even players of their calibre are looking for more game time.
We need a striker and possibly a centre half. That's it.
fridgeboy i dont think i could disagree more.
we are SO much less effective when vdv or someone else is out right instead of lennon.
the whole shape changes and we look worse for it.
for me niko is vdv's natural replacement
and peinaar is an all round utility man when things need to freshened up, or there are injuries, or a less important cup game etc.
RRP - didn't we all say the same thing this time last year? We were in the Champs league, doing alright in the league, and we all said 'this is our best chance to bring in that top striker!'......and nothing happened (other than Levy running around Europe with a bag of cash at about 11.59pm).
I am getting no hopes up whatsoever. If come February 1st we have exactly the same squad as we do now, we'll be in alright shape. Anything beyond that is a bonus.
Phil - Took the words right out of my mouth! This is the EXACT same position we were in last year, brilliant run of form, then all of a sudden our goals start to dry up and we struggle to put away teams...if we make the same mistake of not fixing this problem now, i would be worried
RRP (is it just me, or is it basically just the two of us having a conversation across various threads....)
Bang on. The only thing is, this window - I really think the club, Levy, Harry all KNOW that we must take advantage of this position, hence we've been hearing more about Harry scouting players etc. But even with that, I still refuse to get my hopes up about any signings.
On the subject of signings though....anyone know why we haven't just thrown in a 25mil bid for Tevez? Surely that's worth a shot?!
Phil - Yeah the conversation is on 2 articles at the moment, lets not make it a hattrick
To be fair, i thought Levy and our board were serious this time last year and was fully expecting a big signing to make the difference to us, but it never happened
As i have said, we dont know when we will be in this situation again in the league, we must take advantage, there must be players out there that can improve us and are getable in this window
Man City are mostly likely looking for £35 million for Tevez, did they not turn down £40 million in the summer?!
chronic
that's where BAE and Walker come in. When we are unfortunate enough to have say Lennon missing, Walker gets instructions to drive forward more.
You can't throw huge money in cover positions. Players won't want to sit it out. Even Hoilett would have a problem with little game time. It's about improving the first 11, the same way Friedel, Parker and Ade have.
There aren't many teams in the prem that can keep top players happy on the bench, least of all us as we dont provide the wages to shut them up like City and Chelsea do.
With Tevez, on the radio I heard that City turned down 21mil from Inter because they've set a price of 25, don't know how much truth there is in that.
For all his faults, I just think there's a chance to get a genuine world class striker for a good deal below his true market value.
A good deal? Are you mad? He's will cost over double that in wages. If he gets near £200,000 a week that's nearly £12 million a year in wages. Get him even on a 3 year deal you're looking around £60 million overall if you include the transfer fee. No chance.
"A good deal? Are you mad? He's will cost over double that in wages."
The same rationale I used for why Spurs should not get Torres at 25m.

their first job is to defend though. that may be fine against worse sides but v top sides i dont know if its a good idea to constantly have our fullbacks flying forward because they are suddenly the only wide attacking outlet we have.

14 days to go Don. No rush yet.
Got my seat booked on the bus
RRP, you got front row seat
RRP, Views of the window so far?
Ah front row seat! Will get a good view of the cliff we are about to drive off of
View of the window? 17 days in and we are yet to make any sort of move, why dont they just make the window a week long?
fridgeboy, take your point - but just to clarify, I didn't say it was 'a good deal'. I said it was a chance to get him 'a good deal below his market value' (ie, a good amount less), but I can see why it was misread.
I had also heard that there was talk of him taking a pay cut to nearer the 120k mark. Again it's all rumours...but if you start adding it up, even using the figures that you've mentioned - if he's the 'special player' that means we win the league, it does start to make a bit more financial sense.
