Was Torres ever world-class?

I didn't say it is confidence. I'm saying it's a lot to do with playing without Gerrard. He was spoilt with through balls and assists.

Knowing he's get supplies of balls alone gave him reason to work hard and gave him soo much confidence.

Something else had destroyed his game, but i can't think of another footballer who this has happened to.

Shevchenko?
Most feared striker in Europe until he moved to Chelsea.

Listen mate, Alonso, Gerrard, Masch ...with that midfield supplying Torres he was worldclass no doubt. The confidence he got from the through balls put him in a mind that he was NEVER going to miss.

One other point, Gerrard is such a top player that Torres misses his supply and driving force; rival fans tend to say Gerrard is good,, but believe me Gerrard is as good as ANY in world football in the time Torres had at Anfield.

CFC messed up, they should of bought Gerrard AND Torres; but they couldnt, you see there are quite honestly no other midfielders like Gerrard. I mean, they are some as good but overall he offered everything in his peak.

People will only realise how good he was when he leaves; in fact, go watch a Gerrard video..just awesome mate, awesome...simple as.

Torres was world class. It's not so much about confidence as it is being in your comfort zone. He was in his comfort zone during the Benitez days at Liverpool.

"Or did Liverpool fans merely hype him up beyond his real ability?"

How does our opinion of Torres determine how he is perceived in the world. He has voted for many personal achievements. Obviously scousers are not on the voting panels etc.

It has happened to many players following a switch of clubs. Close to home we have Rush & Fowler who both improved once returning and world class players such as Sheva - or was that just AC Milan fans hyping him up - Forlan, Veron etc etc.

Needs a move in my opinion.

"I don't think Ive seen a natural talent like his at Liverpool before."

That's because you're young. And because you're young you know nothing. Even as a travelling away fan at Anfield I know your talking absolute böllocks about your own team.

As one of your own just mentioned; Robbie Fowler ring any bells?

How deluded are Pool fans, lol. The only reason Torres was any good was because of Gerrard? Yeah, ok. Every goal he scored was the logical result of an amazing Stevie G through-ball? Pathetic.

He was ruined before Chelsea were stupid enough to buy him. Liverpool sucked the confidence out of him with their decline as a club. He realised that the club was a spent force and wanted to move on. Stop being bitter.

There are a few comments here saying it wasn't all down to Gerrard.

He still scored 9 goals in that half a season. He wasn't as good as was, but he was nowhere near as bad as he is at Chelsea. Ruined his career by going to fulham road.

Torres scored 3 goals in 4 matches once Kenny took over. In hindsight he should have stuck with us.

Chelsea would be better off, we'd be better off, and Torres would be better off.

Torres' groin injury has slowed him down. He has lost his spark. He was finished after the world cup.

Someone said before but I'll say it again.

Rafa made Torres worldclass. Not that he didn't have the talent but it seems only Rafa knows how to play to his strenghts.

Torres still show some flashes of his former self at CFC, though they only last about maximum 2 seconds.

There are many factors that helped him at LFC:

Gerrard playing off him
Alonso dictating behind them (more influential than Gerrard for me)
Pressing high up the pitch ensured he received the ball early not allowing the opposing team to get into their defensive shape
Kuyt running around near him helping with closing down of defenders.

Its a shame its all gone wrong for him because the game needs a player of his talent at their best. Hopefully its sooner rather than later

When Torres was at his best, he was pure class. Still one of my favourite players to have ever pulled on the red shirt (being caught up by Suarez though I might add).

He should never have left when he did, he should have given us the rest of that season but now we have Carroll who is getting better and better and right now, I'd easily prefer Andy in my team.

Carroll is chopped liver compared to Torres at his best.....and that coming from a United supporter.

Was he over-rated at Liverpool? Or was he a first-class player who has inexplicably lost his talent?

i don't think he was overrated, he was an absolute animal for a few years.

i'm not sure what has happened to him, it's probably psychological, but he was too good for his talent to disappear. he's too good not to get his mojo back at some point imo.
