Crouch's goal was great but I tend to think going past players and scoring requires more technical skill than long shots.

I would normally agree with this, unless said long shot is a volley or half volley. Then you would have to assess each goal in more depth.

Holt's goal was great, but IMO Crouch's was better

Carroll
lets be serious guys!

Rooney
Defoe
Wellbeck
Sturridge

Thats it, no time for sentiment, theres no place for Crouch, Carroll, Holt or Grahams.

Thats as unbiased as it gets.
Caroll doesnt deserve to be in the squad, he's had a few good games but we cant be rewarding mediocrity.

Crouch's was a better goal. Holt's goal is reflective of his skills as a player though. You can't really gauge a player from them scoring a volley, with Holt's you can see he's for half decent technique. I can see that for watching him as well, good hold up play and link up, and very good in they air. He's like a really really rubbish version of Llorente - I'm comparing style before idiots try and say I'm comparing their ability.

MyNani I think Crouch's goal is better too based on a visual perspective. I wouldn't say it's more technical than Holt's though. Maybe they're about even.

As for the volleying, I think it depends on how. For instance RVP's volley against Everton is technically better than Crouch's due to RVP having to volley it out of the air from a long pass.

Darren well put . That's about the best way you can describe the difference between Holt's and Crouch's goal.

Funny how the Arsenal fans are slating Welbeck... Scored home and away against your shower.

If he were your player, we wouldn't hear the end of it.

Darren and spurtle - I would agree with both of you there.

I can understand everyone's view that it's band wagon jumping with regard to Holt's form this season, however, is it any different to people's views of Carroll? Even Kenny jumped on the band wagon and parted with £35 million.

The thing with Holt is that England could do with a target man for an option B. He's given most of the top defenders in the premier league a hard time with his aerial threat, physicality, and as stated, he can play. There aren't many better options and why I feel he deserves a shot. He certainly does ahead of Carroll, Defoe, Bent and Crouch, who haven't played as good as he has.

Sturridge is Theo's backup and not really a striker anyway.

Dunno who for the 4th spot.

There is shout for Crouch as the target man, he has the experience and the goals but Holt has been quality, the "golden generation" have been disapointing for years and years so why not shake things up a bit?

I'd go for Rooney, Welbeck, one of Crouch and Carroll and Sturridge.

Rooney must go despite his suspension, Welbeck looks a decent second choice, and either of the big Cs and Sturridge offer something slightly different. Could potentially take out Sturridge, and take both Crouch and Carroll, and then let Walcott/Young be used as a striker type thing if pace is needed, but I think it's be good to have a fast player who has played properly as a striker this season.

And despite Holt's form, I can't get it out of my head that he was playing for Shrewsbury about 2 years ago, so he might be good but I still wouldn't take him

I´d rather take Holt over Carroll any day of any week.

Why is it relevant that he used to play for Shrewsbury? Smalling was playing for Maidstone a few years ago, makes no difference. He's still a better player than Carroll regardless of who he played for a few seasons ago.

I think they performed at their level to be honest.

The only reason people say they've been disappointing is because they were overhyped before each tournament.

I agree with that in some respect, redconn. But I do still feel players such as Gerrard and Lampard didn't quite perform to the level they did for their club.

With the overall lack of quality at the moment we are likely to be needing to defend well and counter attack. I see no need to take 5 lead forwards and would take more attacking midfield players. IMO the squad to go barring injuries:

GK
Hart
Ruddy
Stockdale

CB
Cahill
Terry
Lescott
Ferdinand

WB
Smalling
Walker
Cole
Baines

DM
Parker
Lampard
Carrick

AM
Young
Moses
Sinclair
A Johnson
Walcott
Sturridge

FW
Rooney
Welbeck
Carroll
