More to the point would the team that finished 6th in the prem be a number one seed, and the team that could finish 3rd, Spurs not be seeded at all.
It makes a mockery of the whole competition.
I'm fairly certain that if Chelsea won the CL, they'd have to go through qualifying. If I remember rightly, Liverpool had to do the same when they won it.
Chelsea go straight into the play offs if they win cl, the team that cones 3rd still automatically qualifies to the group stage.
The rules have changed though because Everton (4th) and Lpool (5th, CL champs) went to qualifying rounds I think now top 3 and CL winners will automatically go through!
Well Sandy, that's debatable.
How better to seed a European competition, than to base it off of recent performances in Europe? You're saying we deserve a high seeding because we've proven ourselves worthy in a domestic league - but Chelsea have proven it in the CL, which is the competition the seeding is for after all...
Melo - that was the first and only time that ever happened, and all 5 teams went into the competition that year because it would be unfair to chuck out either Everton or Liverpool because of UEFA neglecting to set guidelines for such a scenario...
The rules have been changed since regarding qualification, I'm just unsure about the final qualifying round.
Kranjc It Up
There should be absolute no seeding at all, it is a competition that gives an unfair advantage to a few stella clubs year on year, and to keep seeding them gives than an obvious advantage where their coefficient always goes up because they are invariably given easier groups, thus making it more likely they will qualify from the group.
Totally unfair way to run a competition.

I doubt the powers that be even know how this is all going to work. It's still quite a new rule.
if chelsea win it then all 4 teams go straight into group stages
Right, so that's every possible scenario been touted
Chronic, if that were to happen, what would happen to the place available through the qualifying rounds? Is it really fair to chuck out a team, ie Young Boys, that would also have had a chance from that play-off?
Not sure about that.

dunno. question for uefa not me, i am just telling you what happens !
Sandy - you're right in that, of course. Of course no teams should be given any advantage to qualify - thing is, 'fairness' isn't on UEFA'a agenda here.
The big teams go through > the big teams play each other in the knock-outs > big audiences tune in > cha-ching
But you're sure that is what happens Chronic?
The other three seemed pretty sure too
Reading this has confused me even more

The champions of Belgium would have to go through the qualifiers someone told me this the other week
But you're sure that is what happens Chronic?

I have to admit I very rarely watch the CL, I find most matches incredibly dull, I will of course if Spurs are in it.

This is also my understanding of the situation!
Well I'm glad we managed to sort that one out - clear as mud, good work fellas
It doesn't change anything really, we can only push to finish 3rd, and hope not to go out if we only manage 4th.
And Sandy, I generally agree, unless there's a bit of a humdinger of a match-up... Spurs will enhance the competition again next year though, so no worries

dont listen to batman he doesnt have a clue
Liverpool had to play all three qualifying rounds (one against TNS from memory) - but this was because a 5th English team was added i think. I would say they would just take the rights of the 4th Place team.
i think they should reintroduce 2 group stages
Don't care what anyone says, we lit that competition up in the group stages.
None of this chess match don't lose at all costs borefest for us.
No....we went for it...people sat up....in Europe anyway.
The English already knew how exciting our games are.
