Gutted

Thing is if they send 5 teams through then they have take the place from somewhere else, a country with a low coefficient, which happens to be Belgium. It would hardly be fair on them either.

This is a horrible feeling and i'm suprised to see arsenal fans wum considering how close they came to the same fate. It's a stupid rule but I guess most years the team that wins the thing is good in its domestic league.

Bristol, i personally think we should atleast get the chance to have a play off game with someone then to see if we can get the place. I think it's a travesty if you ask me that we should lose our place when we got 4th Not felt this low as a spurs fan in a long time

I have to say, as a Newcastle fan, if we had pulled of fourth place and then had it taken away from us I would be devastated. I know the rules are the rules but in this case it's just plain unfair.

Gazza, it's bloody gutting mate. I really think spurs should complain

posted on 20/5/12

Yeah maybe a playoff could work but against who? Chelsea? I have always believed that the winners should be able to defend.

posted on 20/5/12

Yes you probably could say Chelsea but again they have won it so i suppose you feel they deserve to get a place but the rule was not there a few years back remember. It could be any team but Uefa would need to look at this. Liverpool complained and got their way so i really don't see why we shouldn't atleast try.

I didn't agree with the rules being changed to suit Liverpool when they didn't qualify through their league place, and have to say that I'm still not convinced. However, precedents have to be set somewhere (Liverpool's game), and someone made the argument that winning the CL to qualify is harder than coming 4th in your league, so that is more 'deserving' of a place.

It's still uncomfortable qualifying this way, but I see what the person was getting at.

blueblood, i'm not saying you don't deserve to get a place but what i am saying is spurs don't deserve to lose out. 5 english teams should be going through and Uefa somehow need to find a solution for this.

Don - Don't worry mate, even though I'm a Gooner, I'm still not happy. Without trying to sound too rude, I really couldn't have given a stuff about Spurs - I wanted Arsenal to be the first London side to win the Champions League. We can't claim that title now.

As poor as Chelsea have been in the league, the two massive trophies they won compensates for that.

But it's all in the head mate. It's all about your psychological state. It's all concerning the mind. I don't rate a lot of Chelsea's players, but they all have a winning mentality. That, mixed with luck, has won them two trophies this season.

The aim of the game is to put the ball in the net. Bayern had 34 shots and scored 1 goal. They had 20 corners and all were rubbish. Chelsea had 6 shots. 3 on target and scored from their 1st corner of the game. Chelsea were strategic and efficient.

You can call them fluky if you want, but Bayern have NO-ONE to blame but themselves because the game should have been put to bed way earlier on.

The fact that Cashley admitted it too typifies that. It was just meant to be. Written in the stars.

I don't really see how Arsenal fans can rejoice when all this result does is see us indulge in another team's win whilst masking our flaws this season.

Spurs may well feel aggrieved after getting 4th, but they should have wrapped 3rd up before hand and so the roles between our sets of fans would have been reversed.

Samir Agree with everything you said mate but it's a really hard pill to swallow right now. You can probably imagine how you would feel if this was reversed and it was Arsenal who had the CL spot snatched away. I know you can turn around and say what about teams getting relegated and that is worse but this is the lowest i have felt as a spurs fan in years,

Do the winners of the Euros or the World Cup get automatic qualification to the next tournament in 4 years time?

I know they used to do so, but I have a feeling it then changed

posted on 20/5/12

not sure mate, i think so

posted on 20/5/12

Well Spain had to qualify again as holders of the Euros, so already one could argue for inconsistency.

The rules weren't changed for us like this.

Don't forget we played qualifiers against teams like TNS of Wales. I think we entered in the first qualifying round.

posted on 20/5/12

Spurs should atleast be able to enter the 1st qualifying round then

Fred, but you were still allowed back in the tournament and took Everton's place, did you not?

Either way, a precedent was set that year that has allowed us to compete this year.

Fred..........

you are not comparing like with like, the situation Spurs are in is more akin to Everton in 2005 not Liverpool.

Morning Don

Typical of Spurs luck to be the first team to not quaify for the CL despite being in the top four.

The rule will only change when one of either Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool finish 4th and do not get to play because a team that finished lower wins the CL. The rules will change super quick then.

Everton stayed in the tournament but got beat in the qualifiers, they then changed the rule the following year.

posted on 20/5/12

blueblood, yes but lucky for Everton they managed to keep their places because Uefa gave them the benefit of the doubt for that year. I think spurs should complain and see if we can book the place we deserve.

posted on 20/5/12

Don, if Spurs' were allowed to enter the QR, someone else would have to be allowed in to compete against you, and then others to make the numbers up to an even amount. Where would it end?

posted on 20/5/12

Oh dear, *Spurs. Yes, I'm pedantic...

posted on 20/5/12

bluebloods, Well it happened with Everton mate, they had to take another side out to stick Liverpool and Everton in so i don;t see why it can't be done now. It's not like this situation happens often mate. The usual champions league winners usually come atleast in the top 4.
