So what if it is a cruel way to lose??
United beat Bayern in 99 with two late late goals in injury time, that was bloody cruel. I didn't hear anybody talking about scrapping injury time??

TCP when did you get back?!?
There is nothing really wrong with penalties, but my only moan would be to stop the keeper from coming forward to spook the player. I can't imagine how tough it is to walk all the way from the half way line crapping yourself and then the keeper start arseing about, moving up and down etc is fine but I hate that in your face crap. A keeper in a shoot out is in a no lose situ, the players are expected to score and so nobody blames him, but if he does save it he's the hero.
"Why did they take away the Golden Goal rule?"
It caused most extra time periods to be played very defensively x
Alternative to penalties
After full time, check the stats and the better team wins the game

Well Chelsea still played those tactics last week..
So now that Chelsea actually win a shoot out UEFA want to scrap pens
Somhow if Byaern had won the pens I doubt we´d be hearing this story.
Why don´t Blatter and Platini just issue a statment saying how gutted they are Chelsea won the CL.
I used to play in a summer tournament where the penalty shoot out was taken BEFORE the game in the knock out rounds. So both sides knew what they had to do before the game started.
Maybe there could be a variation of this, and have the shoot out before the start of extra time? The losing side would be forced to attack etc...

Manchester derby ?
I'm not having a go at your tactics, I'm saying that even though the golden goal rule was scrapped for that reason teams still play defensive in ET.
I'm saying take your chances. But you never had any
penalties are awesome!!!
so much drama! is epic!
I think the fairest way to decide the winner would be to have a phone in to commence immediately after the final whistle. That way after completion of extra time all the players could go in for a nice relaxing bath and return to the pitch smartly attired and clean to find out who had won.
This site was so much better without you TCP for a few months you
I really don't see how you can have an alternative to penalties aside from golden goal, not one that's fair anyway.
The problem is that if you say we'll go until someone scores then you've got the tiredness aspect to deal with. The outfield players are the ones doing the majority of the running, in such a late-late game period the goalkeepers will get comparatively stronger and stronger as they don't need to burn nearly as much energy. So a goal from open play becomes less and less likely and you're relying more and more on a freak goal in those circumstances.
Valencia's Right Foot - true but can you imagine an extra time where both teams played like Chelsea, both desperately afraid of conceding a goal. It's a worse spectacle than the 0-0 Manchester derby last season x
Could end up with both teams piling 11 men in the box with the ball sitting in the centre circle with no one anywhere near it.
I'd watch that.

Agreed.
I know it's not a magic bullet solution, but does anyone else think that teams should get extra substitutes at extra time, perhaps an additional 2 or 3. It would certainly combat the obstacle of tired outfield players versus relatively fresh goalkeepers, that thelimpliberal raised as an issue x
Golden goal
I'd go for that...

Interesting. How about all eleven players have to be substituted by the end of the 120 minutes. If it's still a draw at 120 minutes, the teams play on but with no remaining players - apart from the goalkeeper - on the pitch who started the game.

Did you not see the last farce when that law was in place? it was dire.
