Rooney for England??

It might not be fair but he will walk back into the team.
However we don't know what he's been like in training, he could be proving everyday that he's worthy of a place and he's only been to two finals in 8 years and we didn't exactly do well at either on a whole.
He's a brilliant player and it would be stupid not to play him.

I'd start him on the bench and bring him on if needed later.

He had only played in 3 games in finals in them 8 years

Last world cup EVERY single player was shocking, not a single chance was created for Rooney.

I'd start him but take him off if he weren't playing well so he knows he's not untouchable

I think all the montages (BBC Sport one yesterday) and the Nike one all adds pressure on him. And for England he doesn't perform well under pressure.

It matters not what anyone thinks on here, Roy will start Rooney that is certain.

He could not afford to leave him out, simple as that.

How wud u feel if u were wellbeck or andy?? If u were dropped?

Rooney needs to play. Full stop. Many may remember the fact that I cant stand Wayne Rooney - so I am certainly not biased in favour of him (the opposite actually).

He is the one player we have who can actually control, hold, and pass the ball well and offers a goal threat.

I heard a fan on a phone in show suggest that it whould be Young dropped for Rooney.

Carrol and Welbeck, with Rooney behind in a diamond, with a formation shift to Welbeck out wide should it be required.

So

4-3-1-2 formation.

That doesn't matter, i don't care how they feel they knew the score before the start.

Rooney was missing 2 games then he was going to be back. Everyone knows this and it will happen.

As for Carroll, sure he scored a lovely goal but you can hardly say he's undroppable after that goal.

Rooney and Welbeck work very well together.

He hasn't really done it for England do far. He hasn't scored at a finals for 8 years!!!!!!! That surprised me!!!

What you on about ?

the reason he was so crap last world cup is because he did score

Truth of the matter is he's a player that can change a game and does so on a consistent level with his club. Will he do it for England is something we will only know if we play him. It could be he's possibly too good for the England side just as Bryan Robson, Jimmy Greaves and a host of players have been. They think too quickly, react too quickly and are a yard or so ahead of their team mates. You can iron this out in club games and in training sesions on a weekly basis but when the England team meet so infrequently then it can cause problems.
Should he play? Definately
Can he make a difference? Well that could be down to the players around him giving him the ball or being available for his pass a little quicker than has happened in the past. Possibly why he gets frustrated when playing for England while his attitude is better for United.

Rooney/Welbeck/Young all link up well together an have good understanding of each others game.

There were a couple of incidents in the Sweden game where Gerrard and then Carrol had the ball with time. Walcott was wide of them, and a simple pass was needed to free Walcott 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper. Neither pass was made, either through glory ball or a lack of awareness.

I am confident Rooney would haev played Walcott in on both occassions. Its these type of situations that England need to make more of, and Rooney is the only player we have in the tournament who can spot and execute the right pass under pressure.

As much as I hate the white Pele he still has to play. He will drop into midfield when needed and can unlock defenses. He owes us big time after 2 shocking world cups and hopefully he can deliver this time.

Hodgson is also calling him Pele

"Roy Hodgson believes the returning Wayne Rooney can be England's very own Pele when they take on Ukraine looking to secure progress from Group D."

Rooney has to start. We need rotation in the squad anyway. If Welbeck starts I'm willing to bet tiredness will start to take its toll.

The whole "white pele" thing is nothing to do with Rooney or Utd that was a label put on him by The Sun newspapaer.

It's a pathetic thing to call him, but by all means keep bringing it up if you feel the need.

But yes he has something to prove tonight and confident that he will

Rooney would play. The End

If a player who had never played international football played the way Rooney has for United this season he would be a shoe-in for the England starting 11. To say Rooney shouldn't start because Welbeck and Carroll have each scored a goal is ridiculous. He is a far superior player to both. He proves it week in week out at club level and hopefully will in the coming weeks at international level.

I am in now way at all comparing Rooney to Messi but Rooney like Messi is better for club than country.

Until recently when he scored 2 hatricks in a row that is, Messi has been very ordinary for Argentina.

But if Rooney wants to be remembered as a great player he needs to perform at this level as well as top club level.

I know it's rather stupid, i mean one header suddenly makes him a better option than a player that's scored 34 goals for club this season ??

Carroll will be a very useful sub to bring on.

To be honest, we're damned if we do play him, and damned if we dont.

If we play him & lose, people will be saying we shouldn't have changed a winning formula / dont fix it if it isnt broke etc.

But if he doesnt play & we lose, people will ask why we didnt play our "best" player.

Rooney is a class act, but he's no Messi, so i dont think he'll make as big an impact as we're hoping.

In saying that, i say he starts.
