Can you not deny that from 2004-2009 that Gerrard was one of the best midfielders in Europe? And did it in the Champions League which for me is a higher standard of football than an International tournament.
Gerrards never been the level of xav or players of similar ilki, even at his best.
He's a different type of player to Xavi or Iniesta. He was a game changer and even as a United supporter I could see just how awesome he was. He single handedly dragged Liverpool through games. I just wish he was like that now (for Englands sake)
Gerrard was a very good player but hugely overrated due to being English and a Liverpool player.
He was at his best when he had the freedom of an attacking mid, but still lacked the skill to be considered a top class attacking mid in my opinion.
Decent box to box and goal scoring midfielder. He was often found out in the cl when up against superior players like Pirlo, Kaka and Scholes.
Now he's lost his legs his lack of ability on the ball and footballing brain are evident.
Good player. World class and top bracket player? Not for me.
Note, I know he didn't play Scholes in the cl, but in the prem was often schooled due to not being able to compete with that sort of player. Lampard usually outshone him in the meetings between the two.

Yeah, but remember the 2005 Champions League final?
Gerrard school Pirlo and Kaka in that game.
If he had schooled them they wouldn't have been 3 down at half time and had to bring on Hamman and move him to right back.
Gerrard was chasing shadows in that game.
C'mon Darren, Keane is remembered for schooling (love that term) Juventus in 1999 but even he started that game terribly.
Keane and Gerrard, both in their day the kind of midfielders that could step it up a gear when needed.
He helped change the game with his goal and his dive, but for 120 minutes Milan completely dominated that game. At no point were Liverpool in control of the midfield. Gerrard did a solid job at right back when moved there.
It's an insult to Keane to compare his marvellous performance against Juve to Gerrard's poor one against Milan.
Mate, Keane was a legend but tell me one Champions league game other than that Juve game where he transferred his Premier League form to Europe.
Gerrard was incredible in 2005 against Olympiacos, Leverkusen, Juventus and Chelsea and again in 2007 on the way to another final against AC Milan.
Keane never seemed to do it in Europe other than that one game.
England drew with Italy, Germany lost to them. One can only conclude that England are better than Germany from this.
Keane was the same, as are a lot of these action football, they often go missing against technically superior opposition.
I disagree with these assertions that Gerrard was incredible. Misplacing passes, getting caught in possession and out of position is not a sign of incredible. This is what I'm saying about the goals masking his performance.
Credit for scoring them, and he has a great shot on him, and what was incredible about him was his ability to come up with a goal when needed (although there's a reason he's called Stevie Me), but this just masks his performances and people remember the goal and not how well he played.
The fact you're saying to me now that he was incredible and schooled Pirlo and Kaka suggests that you've completely forgotten how that game actually happened.
Maybe I was a bit hasty to use the term 'schooled' but I remember that game vividly and as soon as the second half kicked off he was a man possessed and scored the goal to start the comeback. Pirlo and Kaka barely did anything from then until the penalty shootout (which Pirlo missed in)
Hamann changed that game
If the kaiser had played for any other club he'd be hailed as a legend
League titles, CL finals, WC Finals
Who'd he play for? Oh.... he's not as good as players for more fashionable clubs.
Kaiser ****ing brilliant player
Agreed redconn. Hamman changed the game. Milan's midfield was still very much in control, but Hamman shored Liverpool's up and they became a lot more solid.
Hamman was a very underrated player. You don't get that many caps for Germany unless you have something about you.
there's a lot of myth about that match both ways IMO
we were second best that day the score was completely flattering to Milan
One goal was from a freekick cross and another when we were denied a nailed on penalty and everyone on both sides stopped playing waiting for the ref to point to the spot except one Milan player who ran up the pitch to score practically uncontested.
We shouldn't have won but it wasn't the lopsided 3-0 as made out.
Should have been 2-1 at halftime.
I think that's pretty fair.
Funrob, your posting style and logic behind your argements make you sound like a 12 year old. The tiers you put up are silly. Portugal are also better than we are. Using your logic, they schooled Spain so must be bettter.
They made Spain look like England and that is impressive.
If they had a striker like Shearer, they would win tournaments with ease
England played not to lose. Germany played to win.
Had Germany played like England on the night they also would have drawn 0-0.
Imo any team can play this tactic, it doesn't make England any further ahead just because England's result was arguably better.

England weren't that bad after all.
