Seriously though, if he wins it.. is that fair?
Are the others going to have to chop their legs off to compete?? <yike>
Fair enough, the point is the principal though - to say that Wiggins did achieved more in one race than Hoy's done in his career does a great disservice to him. Matter of opinion though I guess
================
yep, fair enough
without the training you dont get the gold, wiggins achievement is the greatest of the two but to dismiss hoys as irrelevant is extremely disrespectful and downright ridiculous really
It smells soooo goooood tho...
People say that he doesn't get lactic acid, but he has no legs! He has to run using his thighs as the blades do not have blood circulation. He finishes strongly, but you have to remember that he starts awfully, due to not having the spring that able-bodied people have.
JPB, I was kind of with you when you said track cycling had too many similar events yesterday.
The complete dismissal of it though, I can't agree with.
Its like saying only the london marathon counts in athletics.
I will say training is relevant though - and achievement is just as much personal than anything else. If you dedicate your life to it like any of the gold medallists must then it's all a matter of opinion.
I guess Wiggins being the first Brit to win the tour, and the muttonchops win it on novelty value for me

i didnt say that he was irellevant, i said that his success is less notable than wiggins', which it is. that's neither disrespectful or ridiculous, it's just stating the truth.
AFL, that is why I don't think he should compete. He is pretty much doing a different event to everyone else, and although the difference is not great it is enough imo.
It is like having a Nissan Micra race and letting one Mini Cooper in.
I have absolutely nothing against disabled people, but the Olympics is for able bodied humans.
Pistorious should be in the Paralympics
you did a bit more than say it was less notable you compared to a being a bus driver while wiggins was the us president
Agreed jukebox - I was mucking about, but genuinely - what happens if he wins? How are human beings supposed to compete with manufactured legs? Where do we draw the line??
The TDF is a very high profile sport and very highly paid, whilst hoy's event is much more niche. The more specialised you get, rowing, sailing etc the public's view of it is probably lower.

greatest quote of the day
ennis is above murray even if he wins two golds spurtle, she is confirmed as the 5th greatest ever all female track and field athlete and the current best in the world
---------------
Don't know about that. I know the spotlight is firmly on Ennis right now, but Murray winning 2 golds on the same day will get him a lot of admiration I expect, along with his Wimbledon final.
Fair enough D'Jeezus and jukebox.
well she is, she scored the 5th highest score ever in the heptathlon which makes her the 5th greatest all round sportswoman ever in track and field

Exactly, it's kind of like saying Mansell was a better driver than McRae - the disciplines, and the skills involved are completely different. Is Casillas a better player than Rooney etc..
Just put them all on Big Brother to decide the SPOTY winner.

you could quite easily interchange low "profile" with naff.
i dont think that it's a case of being niche, it's just a cae of being less noteworthy.
The thing about the TDF is guys from Mountain Biking or Track Cycling will try and move into it if they can and are physically able to. It is a pinnacle sport.
