you could quite easily interchange low "profile" with naff.

In your opinion. Lots of people would take offence to that, like people who dedicate their lives to winning gold medals for their country in "naff" events
Exactly, it's kind of like saying Mansell was a better driver than McRae - the disciplines, and the skills involved are completely different. Is Casillas a better player than Rooney etc..
============
it's not the same at all. it's more like saying that the world champion 100m runner is better than the world record kite flyer.
Is rowing naff or prestige cos we're good at it?
Volleyball is naff here but massive in other countries..
It's all a matter of perception
I don't have a spare million for a category A27RZ Catamaran class B. IMO some golds are definitely worth less than other.
JPB, just because you don't think the sport is worthwhile, doesn't mean it isn't. Say that to those athletes that sacrifice almost every waking hour preparing for these championships for years. It's physically as gruelling as other sports. You could argue that, just like Bolt and a 10,000m runner, the cycling sprints are faster than Wiggins, but he has better endurance. Why is either better than the other?
Some golds may be worth to you but that doesn't mean they're actually objectively worth less.
Kite flier
Have some more respect for these amazing athletes.
Having said all that.. trampolining?!
Just realised that Ian Thorpe is done. Whose campness am I going to laugh at now?
look at the state the two male rowers were in at the end of their race and tell them their sport is naff and they're accomplishments are no more worthy than kite flying
colin jackson and ian thorpe could become a camp comedy duo
Thing with trampolining is that it is probably a more accessible so I don't mind it that much.
Thorpe looked depressed half the time
One good thing the Olympics has done for us - trampoline accessibility.
Why are some golds worth more than others? I'm sure to the athletes, they're worth exactly the same. It's the pinnacle of their sporting career (for most, except those of football, boxing, tennis etc).
You only have to see how gutted the athletes are when they don't get gold to realise how much it means to them.
No-one in the world can cycle as fast as Chris Hoy or our other sprinters. To call their golds less worthy is unfair and wrong.
I agree that endurance cycling is harder as they have to endure unbearable amounts of lactic acid build up, but could Wiggins beat Hoy in a short distance race? No.
Each of them are at the pinnacle of their particular disciplines. We should be celebrating both in equal measure.

who cares who takes offense at it ?
youn cant go round telling everyone that theyre just as good as everyone else just so you dont offend anyone.
these guys are professional sportsmen. everyone in cycling knows that the tour de france is the premier cycling event. nobody in cycling would pipck out one of the dozen or so guys who have won one of the going round the track events as having avhieved more than or as much as the tour de france winner.
the suggestion i was replying to was that a sportsman is unfairly disadvantaged if their sport is less publicised than another sportsman's. the point that i have made is that there is likely to be a reason for that.
the truth is that the tour de france is always going to be given more build up and press coverage than the 4 times round the velodrome, and that it will always be regarded as the superior event.
Trampoling may seem odd but its not a case of just jumping up and down. There is technique involved in it.
which is why mark cavendish is returning to track cycling JPB he must prefer doing naff sports

what's that got to do with it ?
he couldnt beat johnny herbert in a formula one car/ does that mean that johnny herbert should have as much chance as brad wiggins to win this year's sport's personality ?
of course it doesnt.
who cares who takes offense at it ?
-------
The people you're insulting by comparing their achievements to bus drivers and kite fliers.
No-one's saying the TDF isn't a world famous event, but disparaging Hoy and others' achievements to make the point is frankly unnecessary.

I can do back flips and land on my feet on a trampoline, give me a gold medal.
Trampolining requires the same technique as gymnastics in many ways.
you seemed alrite last nite JPB now youre sounding like a right arrogant

he cant win the tour de france.
he struggles to compkete the course.
do you think mark cavendish would rather win another track event instead of a tour de france ?
dont be ridiculous.
