I agree with his stance on this, as long as it doesn't stop us from achieving our goals.
I reckon it was Lonergans agent.
I've been dead set against this approach all summer. The wage structure and the frees over signings. But, reading this, I might be climbing on top of the fence.
I'm starting to see/understand the Club's stance better.
Oh dear.
here was one player, no names, who we were negotiating with, we offered him an increase of over a third on him existing salary and he turned it down and came back with a bigger demand so we ignored it.
...................................................
Here is a question
How would leeds and bates know what the players existing salary was???
bluememe, because they do their homework
batty, I agree with his negotiating stance, don't know if we have the wages right though.
Nobody is advocating silly money, just competitive money.
It's great saying he was asking for a third more, but what if he was from a club that paid lower than Leeds do?
Blue, it's late, can you answer your own question so I can understand the point you are making? Sorry. Long day.
My take it is all about value.
I'd gladly pay someone like Westwood 15k/20k
But the Preston keeper isn't a 10k keeper, not even a 5k keeper
Am dead against a wage structure because it restrict you, I'd rather have a wage pool, where you can't exceed it but can pay the better players well
The agent would have told them I suppose and it wasn,t Loneghan as he was probably the best paid player at PNE
I agree with KB,Harvey, they made an offer and it was turned down, the player and agent now can't accept the offer doesn't exsist anymore.
Some players and agents will have to accept that unless your irreplaceable,or signing for clubs with endless cash, clubs won't be held to ransome.
It should be a pleasure to play for a team like Leeds United so if a player is more interested in how much he is getting paid than coming to play for such a HUGE club, Bates is right to tell him to do one!!!

True Jonty. I guess I'm worn out on why we do this that and the other off the pitch. I'd rather focus on why we do this that and the other on it now. Good riddance to silly season and sleepless bleeping nights and explosion-less days.
batty, good to finally have a pre-season game at last!
Yes indeed Jonty. I've gone from glass-rolled-off-the- table-and-smashed-on-the-floor to half-full in one week.
And who says binge drinking is bad for your health!
Viva Leeds!
Pne wage bill is alot lower than ours so probably is that keeper
I actually agreed with the club stance at first, but after thinking about it, I've slightly changed my mind, think of it this way
It's the agents job to get the best deal for client, that what they do, he trying to negotiate, leeds called his bluff, he come back and said yes we'll do the deal. Leeds can't really have wanted the player
A strange one
NW agent called the bluff, maybe should have accepted 1 st deal?
when club says no,they are now in the driving seat,player/agent can't say we had a rethink,
the offer doesn't stand.
just hope it was smith they were dealing with.
Esta how we doing mate
Think of it this way
We've lost out on a player we wanted, why negotiate if we didnt, for the wages we were willing to pay
Cutting off your nose to spite your face, springs to mind
At first i was with the club, but more I think about it, the more daft and strange it.
Would anyone be happy if the same thing happened to gradel ????
we offered him an increase of over a third on him existing salary and he turned it down and came back with a bigger demand so we ignored it. He came back yesterday, his agent said ‘we’re happy to accept the offer you made’. I said ‘what offer, you turned it down?’. ‘No, no’ the agent said, ‘we’ve changed our mind’. ‘Yes’ said Shaun Harvey, ‘and so have we’. He can stick where he is and not get a rise because he’s being too bloody greedy or the agent was.
.......................................
It does not make sense tho does it? Like liw says the agents job is to the the best price for the players wages yes?
Leeds offerd him what they thought was a good offer. The agent called leeds bluff and went for more that leeds ignored.
So the agent comes back few days later and says we will take your first offer but then leeds turn him down.
Why?
They won the battle of the wages for a player they wanted. Or why would they be talking to that player?
It does not make sense.
Are leeds expecting a player to take there first offer more or less or get stuffed and move on every time we try and get a player?
Is that why we keep getting poor players that can't believe there luck when leeds come asking for them? ie billy paynter? Where do i sign as bet he said.
he was offered more money than he was on he was being greedy. he could not get the deal he wanted else where and came crawling back to us. its not the type of player we want. we need players who want to play for the club not because of the pay they get.
It was leeds that offered him an increase of over a third on him existing salary in the first place yes?
The player- agent went for more and failed. And they would have taken the offer leeds offerd in the first place.
But then leeds turn them down and say We are not going to break the bank, we are not going to put our financial security in jeopardy and as we move on towards August 6
It does not make sense.
Wakey,I see your point the obvious thing to do would be to shake hands and deal done.
as for cutting of yer nose....wouldn't make much difference to ken.

I think this is great news. We've put the little toe rag in his place and when news gets around, which it will, the agents will know not to mess with us.
This is the type of scenario I was trying to alert the hysterical amongst us who were reaching for the cut throat razor a couple of weeks back.
It isn't rocket science! In fact it's as simple as a game of poker. You have a spiv of an agent who is trying to emulate the Aussie s c u m bags and the Derby sick notes agents and he got shown the door. Now be honest and admit would you have folded or would you have had the bottle to call their bluff?
I think I recall someone relating having seen a twitter from Lonergan, after it was reported that the deal had fallen through, saying don't believe what you read I haven't turned Leeds down we're still negotiating! That's what he thought !
It makes me think that they've gone down another road which might see Stockdale arriving!
I'm 100% behind Bates here. If they are coming to Leeds just because of money and not because they want to be a part of our great club, then they are not wanted. No matter their salary, they would just be a drain on morale in the changing room.
......................................................
But all players want as much money as they can. Is it not normal for a player to ask for more money in this day and age? And they are not coming to Leeds just because of money because they ened up accepting leeds first offer in the end any way.
But then turned him down but he still would been on the same wages they offerd in the first place if he would come.
