That's the sentiment among a very large section of Espanyol fans. They want a club that's open to everyone regardless of political inclinations. Since Barça is so entwined with Catalan nationalism, that inevitably means that a lot of Spanish nationalists, both Catalans and immigrants from elsewhere in Spain, are drawn towards Espanyol, but there are also many Catalan nationalists for whom supporting Espanyol is a family tradition that dates back many a generation.

Ironically, the initiative to found Espanyol was driven by 3 Catalans, while Barça was the brainchild of Swiss national Hans Gamper. Barça's colours are said to imitate those of FC Basel, of whom Gamper was one of the first captains before he moved on to co-found FC Zurich.

At the time Espanyol were founded, the existing clubs in Barcelona weren't taking any new members and were predominantly made up by foreigners. The idea was to create a club for Barcelona's football-loving Spaniards, Catalan or otherwise. The original club was comprised almost entirely by Catalans, plus 2 Basques and an Andalusian.
