Haven’t watched Southampton much this season - but JWP was pretty good last year. Really took a step up I thought, definitely outperformed PEH who didn’t quite have the mobility to cope in Hassenhuttl’s system

Hojbjerg was doing great, team captain and all. Only got dropped for Romeu cos he wanted to leave I thought.

I’d challenge you to name a single Rennes or Mongenhardtospell’s name - but there’s no proof you wouldn’t be cheating

1. Staying at spurs, new manager
2. Going to a top 4 pl team
3. Going to a continental champions league team
4. Staying at spurs with Jose
5. Going to a mistake PL team

Would be his order of preferability I'm guessing

You're right I can't. But for that reason I don't think he'd take a move to a club like that. He'd either want a decent CL regular, or he might as well stay in England where he'll earn better money and be in with a better chance of getting picked for England

Definitely that's what he'll want. I think in order of likely to happen

1. Sit on the bench at Spurs, do alright in the cups, become a cult hero, go into the coaching setup
2. Go to a mid table team for circa 25m stay there and have a solid career
3. Go to a club in Spain, disappear
4. Go out on loan to prove himself, come back and be a regular first XI for us

Yeah I’m not saying he was terrible and he’s certainly better than Romeu. I just know a fair few Saints season ticket holders who were sad to see him go as a person/captain but thought he was ok/good for him but nothing special.

They were also surprised at how good he has been for spurs - he suits the sitting role far better than the Ndidi/Kante role.

posted on 8/3/21

Yeah they were blatantly bitter when he said he wanted out. Remember all the Spurs fans saying Eriksen wasn't all that?

For sure though he's been much better as a CDM than he was as a box to box mid. I do think Jose deserves credit for that

posted on 8/3/21

I don’t think so.

Even some of the spurs analysts on Twitter mused the same outcome as well. It’s fine that there is a player who doesn’t excel in one role then surprises you in his best role

Rodri also fits in the same boat. He’s decent when sitting but quite exposed when he has to cover loads of ground like Fernandinho/Gueye/Ndidi/Kante excel at. Rodri was the main reason City was so poor defensively when we beat them 2-0

posted on 8/3/21

Yeah I think you're being difficult if you're not going to give any credit to Jose for signing Hojbjerg and the way he's played.

I'm not sure I understand this? Are you referring to Winks or Hojbjerg?

PEH. I don’t think he’d have been effective at the base of City’s midfield as he’d have to insane amounts of covering which Rodri has often struggled with

I do give Jose credit. I saw a decent player who fit in a role that we were severely lacking at a reasonable price. I didn’t think he’d be as quality as he is - but what is clear is he suits a ‘shielding’ DM role as opposed to the ‘presser/destroyer’ that was expected of him at the Saints.

OK now I see what you're saying. Agreed, yeah, Hojbjerg isn't suited to how City play at all. But I don't think Rodri is a direct comparison, he's much more a quarterback like when we had Dier in there.

posted on 8/3/21

Yeah but I actually don’t think Dier 15/16 and PEH are a million miles away from eachother

posted on 8/3/21

Maybe not. Though I'd wager Dier was making a ton more tackles in midfield than Rodri does.

Rodri fulfills the Carrick role.. Busquets if you like. When you've got possession the majority of time in the majority of games your deepest midfielder doesn't need to be a busy tackler. Players like Hojbjerg (Mascherano, Fernandinho) end up at CB in sides like that.

Horses for courses I guess.
