I agree it was not directly about Hillsborough as I said before it implies more than one incident, Suarez and Hillsborough being two of them.
------------------------------------
Not Heysel?
Which, in its latest reincarnation, has been about the Suarez Evra affair
==========================================
Its latest reincarnation was just after the Hillsborough findings.
I repeat: how do you know it was still referring to the Evra/.Suarez case?
=========================================
If you have seen anything different reported I'd be interested to see the article?
========================================
Any idea what Dion Dublin and Robbie Savage were condeming on MOTD2 last night? It was clearly reported in the context of the Hillsborough findings.

The song has been sung by United fans at pretty much every match since the Suarez/Evra affair. It would have been sung at the weekend whether or not the Hillsborough info had been released last week.
I didn't see MOTD2 last night so can't comment.

I don't know about you, but there are times at Old Trafford that the fans sing about Leeds, City, Pool etc. and we aren't playing them. Just to do with the atmosphere.
There'sOnlyOneReds (U1721)
No one is defending it, but rather, showing you that it does have innocent connotations. Another example was the term "Man U" people use it to refer to the shortened form of Man United, but for some, they take offense to it because they think it is in response to M-U-N-I-C-H.
I don't know about the real world as I don't have many mouthy Pool mates, but with my experience on 606, I have found that there are fans from each of the big four clubs who think that the FA is out to get Suarez, which Fergie instigated, Suarez is innocent, their players are holier-than-thou...so it just isn't fair to immediately say that a chant is in reference to a tragedy based on your interpretation of it.

==================================================
Your fans sing about Liverpool at every match? Blimey, I guess there's a kind of flattery in that. Liverpool fans certainly don't sing about United at evey match.
And you're saying that it was never sung before the Suarez/Evra affair? If that is the case, what is this 'latest recinarnation/? Surely it's only had one incarnation?

Yes some of them do and I do agree that it is pretty sad. Not something that I ever join in with as I'd much rather sing about my own team.
It has been sung for many years prior to the Suarez/Evra affair. I think I am right in saying that it was sung as far back as Heysel, but I could be wrong about that as I was only 6 at the time. Some of the older United fans might be able to clarify on that.
Another example was the term "Man U" people use it to refer to the shortened form of Man United, but for some, they take offense to it because they think it is in response to M-U-N-I-C-H.
========================================
Lol. By what twisted logic does the term ‘Man U’ refer to M-U-N-I-C-H?
I’ve heard the term ‘Man U’ used since I was a kid, it would never have occurred to me that it referenced Munich.
I never saw the dyslexic version of Countdown.
It has been sung for many years prior to the Suarez/Evra affair.
==========================================
OK, so your logic is this:
After Heysel it referred to Heysel.
After Hillsborough it referred to Hillsborough.
After Suarez/Evra it referred to Suarez/Evra.
But after the Hiillsborough findings....it still referred to Suarez/Evra?? That's how you've decided?????

-------------------------------------------------
There have been breaks when it wasnt sung. However, we were not in a period before last week where it was not being sung and it was being sung because of the Evra/Suarez affair. Irrespective of whether the information last week was released, it would still have been sung last weekend.
Seems the utd fans are defending their own like the pool fans defend their own, funny that.
Some one explain why United issued a statement condemning the chants if it wasn't about Hillsborough. Have they issued similar statements every other time the chants have occurred? If not then there's your answer.
Also to be fair it was only a handful of fans that sung it but I think those particular fans were actually mocking Hillsborough. The majority of united fans have been with us on this one.
I don't know if the chants at the weekend where about Hillsborough or not and I don't want to get into that, but what I do know is United fans have never been very creative with their chanting. They come up with one and drone on with it game after game. There is very little wit or imagination involved never has been, you would have thought a club with their following could do better.
Kemlyn Road (U10652)
Apparently, there was a chant sung by our rivals fans which went along the lines of:
Man You(U) Never Intended to Come Home
Now if you take the capitals of the words I typed you get
M-U-N-I-C-H
That is why some people get offended when Manchester United is referred to as Man U.
Some one explain why United issued a statement condemning the chants if it wasn't about Hillsborough. Have they issued similar statements every other time the chants have occurred? If not then there's your answer.
---------------------------------------
United issued a statement as there is a very big game between the 2 clubs this weekend that everyone is scared witless will end in a riot. United are doing everything they can to keep the peace. I'm not defending those that sang "that song" neither am I saying it was a reference to Hillsborough. It's just a really sensitive time at the moment so best to be cautious & release a statement.
I think it was bad timing to sing that song, knowing it could raise tensions, but (much like this thread) some people just want to stir up an already fractious atmosphere.
OP you came looking to start an arguement & cause more unrest between the 2 sets of fans.... after 280+ comments I'm sure you got what you wanted.
Again Elvis it couldn't have originated from Heysel because the words 'always' and 'never' are used which implies more than one incident. These chants started after Hillsborough and resurfaced after the Suarez incident.
To be fair Half a Big Bite, you're spot on there.
Telegraph journalist and United fan Jim White, the author of the marvelous book 'Are You Watching Liverpool' makes exactly the same point, that the high point of Stretford End wit was chanting 'bring on the dustbin' when an opposition player was injured. We've always been that sort of club. Stilll, we can't all have a stand full of 15,000 fooking hilarious Tarby's can we?
that idiot Green on Radio 5 suggested that Liverpool and United fans sing YNWA together on Sunday before the game. Like that would happen. Maybe they could all sing Forever and Ever afterwards.

One reason why the club issued a statement might be because of the potential trouble this can of worms can unlock, something L'pool under KD should have done with Suarez/ Evra. The last thing you want is for another issue being dragged out and escalating into fan voilence etc. just diffuse the situation and move on. That is one argument why Man United released a statement.
Half a Big Bite (U7237)
It is my understanding that "We do what we want" is a United original, in response to stewards telling fans to sit. Now you listen to most games and you hear a variant of that chant. Also you, as a Pool fan may not be in a position to talk as I remember your "Torres" chant sounded a fair bit similar to our O'shea chant.
There have been breaks when it wasnt sung. However, we were not in a period before last week where it was not being sung and it was being sung because of the Evra/Suarez affair.
================================================
That's the kind of bizarre contortion of logic I was looking for, Elvis. Thanks for that.
The truth is that you have nohing other than this bit of logical gymnastics to fall back on. In the week after the Hillsborough events, even non-Liverpool fans will draw their own conclusions, and that's why MUFC issued an apology.
I don't think you're the kind of poster who'd justify it, Elvis, and I believe most United fans would comdemn it.....but you are trying to mitigate it, and at the very least, you can't possibly know that it didn't refer to Hillsborough..
I'd sing YNWA if you were allowed to punch Alan Green hard in the face after every line.

see you can be witty if you put your mind to it

Liverpool fans sang a song to that tune in the 1965 Cup Final.
