English Football League chairman Rick Parry has said the current season needs to be concluded before 31 July and that clubs face a "£200m hole" by September.
The former Liverpool chief executive admitted the EFL needed a "proper reset post-Covid", with clubs currently "stacking up creditors".
Parry said it was "difficult to answer" how many might go out of business.

Customers can now order from a range of about 130 M&S food and household items through Deliveroo.
M&S has kept its Simply Food stores and food halls open during the coronavirus pandemic, but the delivery service will make its products available to those confined to their homes.
It says deliveries will take 30 minutes and there is a £4.99 charge.
The service is available from 142 M&S outlets across the country.

The UK's economy is on track for its deepest downturn "in living memory", according to a closely watched survey, as businesses suffer from the lockdown.
The survey from IHS Markit/CIPS found the UK's dominant services sector contracted at a record pace last month.
Around 79% of services, such as cafes and hairdressers, reported a fall in business activity amid mass shutdowns in response to the coronavirus.
IHS Markit said UK GDP could fall at a quarterly rate of 7%.
However, it also warned that the decline could be even greater.

The proposal is part of changes aimed at addressing the financial impact of the coronavirus in a letter to teams from F1 managing director Ross Brawn.
F1 has proposed a cap of $145m (£116m) in 2021, reducing to $140m in 2022 and $135m for the period 2023-25.

A man has died after reports of a water buffalo attacking two men and a woman.
The 57-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, after Gwent Police officers were called to a commercial address at Gwehelog, near Usk, Monmouthshire.
A man, 19, and woman, 22, were also injured.
