I dont think Wilshere is overrated at all. He will be one of the best, if not the best, central midfielder in the world when he peaks. I honestly believe that. The hype over Ashley Cole has always been warranted as well I feel.

All the others on that list, yes.

Sterling - There's another one I would bet won't go on to be that great. Hyped so much, another Tony Daley , SWP, Lennon perhaps..who knows yet and that's why I say they get overhyped, before they have done anything. Walcott was in the past, Wishere is now. Looks a terrific player but he ain't done much yet so should just be seen as a terrific player who could go on to be great player.

Terry in his prime was arguably the best centre half in the game. I can't stand the cretin but in no way was he overrated. The last decade or so we've had some genuine world class defenders. Rio, Sol, Terry, Neville, Cole and even a fit King and Woodgate were top, top defenders and in no way overrated.

Even the likes of Lampard and Gerrard were top class footballers and although overrated to the extent they couldn't be dropped for the national team, they were still worthy of their praise.

the fact that Zaha is in the list shows how overrated he has already become.
===============

No it doesn't. I've been on this board a while and I've seen the general consensus go from Zaha being a "promising young player" to being "overrated and never good enough for a top level club so stop saying he is" almost instantly.

There was never a stage in which people thought he was ready to be a star in a top level club, the furthest his hype got to was to be bought as one for the future.

As it is, this case of claiming Zaha to be overrated is simply another case of people jumping on the bandwagon so that they look like they no more than they really do.

RBW and Bloodred - Agree with you guys.
ANd not to be biased even our own Cleverley, good, tidy player but I would suggest he has been hyped up big time these last 12 months !

oh and scholes wasnt overrated, in fact him being shunted out to the left wing to accomodate 2 players not fit to lace his boots was disgraceful

You could just as easily look at any other top European nation's media and see how they rate their players as being slightly better than their counterparts and call those players overrated. Overall, it makes absolutely no difference.

michael owen wasnt overrated either

All the others on that list, yes.
______________

Actually, forget that. I've always felt Lennon is pretty underrated.

Scholes was never rated highly enough in this country, well true Mexican. Don't blame him for knocking it on its head. Him and Gazza best two English midfielders of last 20+ years

I have no idea how well Zaha plays each week as I don't watch much of Crystal Palace, nor the Championship.

If we are to judge him he needs to play in the PL. Until he does that fact he gets on a list like this shows that the hype is working.

This is a view from the bandwagon of knowledge

In no way has Cleverley been overhyped either. I think people just pretend players are claimed to be messiahs.

Not a lot gets said about him. He's generally seen as the good, tidy and efficient player that he is. He isn't a world beater, never will be and has never been said to be.

Like I said earlier, Rooney, Hart and an ageing Gerrard are the only guys that get crazy and silly hype.

Some of them are, certainly not all. That's just silly

Terry in his prime was arguably the best centre half in the game.

--------------

Terry in his prime wasn't even the best centre back at Chelsea let alone the world. Carvalho was better than him.

Terry has good leadership skills and good positioning. I wouldnt say he was world class in any way.

Hart is overrated.

Rooney is overrated.

The only true world class players over the year -

Gerrard
Gazza
Shearer

Exactly !

Molby

I said it was arguable. I naturally preferred Rio and Vidic and I always rated Puyol highly. But between 05-09 Terry was right up there.

There is no hype of Zaha considering almost everyone on here is calling him overrated despite there no really being a large amount of hype surrounding him.

The facts are:

He's a young player with potential

He has the potential to be a good winger at national level, not world class but worthy of a place in the national side

He is FAR better than Championship quality

Right now, he would do well at a decent/mid table Premiership club

or

He would be a good back up option for a top club who are looking for a winger to nurture to be a future starter.

posted on 31/12/12

Sorry, but anyone that can't see how good Terry was is just clueless. Absolute madness.

posted on 31/12/12

I think Phil Jones has potential to be world class if he is nurtured correctly.

Gary Hooper will score goals if you give him a chance. I think he will be in the next squad.

K26 - Sorry but Cleverley was hyped before the Euros and during Olympics by the media, the player to take over England's future midfield when the so called golden generation step down, golden showers more like !
Our forums debate him regularly, many see him as our messiah in midfield. Yes he is young and neat and tidy and I like him but lets not get carried away. He is just about establishing himself as our midfield 2nd choice

posted on 31/12/12

I have more hope for Smalling. He's easily the most underrated English player in the country. He's so good. Along with Wilshere, they are the only two younger players I can confidently say will be up there with the best in their positions.

Jones has potential, but has a long way to go.

posted on 31/12/12

A lot of Cleverley's "hype" comes from the expectation of him from our fans. Having had Scholes in there for so long, SAF then essentially replaces Cleverley with him so naturally everyone expects more than what we will get.

Cleverley is an average player and nothing more.

Because we havent signed a world class CM or even a good CM, the expectation falls on his head.

Cleverley is a future England starter unless we get a sudden, unexpected, influx of top range central midfielders. That isn't overrating Cleverley's ability, it's simply the truth.
