meltonblue, sadly that says it all.

I have a warm glow in my heart when JT/Kompany or Vidic makes a bone-crunching, last-ditch tackle equal to when Messi skips three challenges and chips the keeper.

People wrongly and disdainfully seldom appreciate defenders.

Vidic in 2010/2011
===========
Really? In neither 2010 or 2011 he was that good to be mentioned as one of the very best.

Bit of Manchester United bias? Think so.

Agree completely, it is a very under appreciated art. What annoys me is where, say, either we or you draw two all in a game. Most of the time, the articles afterwards are about why the team didn't score more goals and win the game, very rarely is is about defensive frailties. Ditto if it is a 1-0 win, whoever scored the goal gets the credit, not the defense for keeping a clean sheet.

I get that it is not as glamorous, but watching Kompany last year was just as exciting for me as watching Silva or Toure.

It is obvious Vik has an IQ in single digits. No point debasing oneself debating with him.

Football is a team game so these individual award thingys always provoke arguments that never needed to be made in the first place!

MB, you also tend to find that the only time defences are praised, is when they hold out against a big team. Celtic are a good example of this against Barcelona. However, in situations where, as you say, a team wins 1-0, the defence isn't really credited. It appears you have to be expected to be thrashed for your defence to be recognised.

The award is really based on last season when kompany was rock for city, same for Ramos. Both won the league title in their respective league. Vidic same thing in 2010/2011 season. He and Nani were carrying us to the league title and champions league final. He was consider the best at that time. Hope he regains his form.

No, the award is for the calendar year. Hence why Messi's 91 goals won him the award.

I am not putting defender above cr7 and Messi but this award is about politics, a bit like Eurovision. They were both great but a striker or attacking midfielder will keep winning it. I don't think a keeper stands a chance and same with defenders.

Oh I thought it was season based award rather than yearly but does not make a difference. The most important part of the season is from April to July ( if there's any international tournaments.

Oh wow, what a deluded fool.Goals win you games! If you don't understand that simple concept, god help you.

You can prevent 1000 goals, who cares if you're not scoring?
-------------------------------------------------

This comment might be even thicker! A goal line clearance, a last ditch tackle and countless interceptions which stop the other team scoring are as good as a goal because it means your team doesn't have to score twice to take the lead.

It's just playing into that flawed argument that only attackers are good players, whilst defenders are cloggers and workers. It's just ridiculous.

"You can prevent 1000 goals, who cares if you're not scoring?"

And actually, to directly address this point, who cares if you're scoring 1000 goals if you're conceding 1001? There's a reason why formations evolved from 0-0-11 to one with dedicated defenders Egg and your face, collide.

Yeah messi should be ashamed of himself that e has been far and away the best player ever the last four years. He should give defenders a chance in my opinion.

That truly was an impressively stupid comment you made.

Well done you.

No well done to you.

My thoughts were that you had made an impressively stupid comment. That should be pretty clear. I didn't follow up and explain why I thought that because to make such an impressively stupid comment in the first place, you're pretty thick.

And I have neither the time or patience to try and reason with you.

tbh the most talented players play in advanced positions, you are unlikely to get the most technically gifted players playing in centre back.

How can you see defenders as crucial when you literally just posted this?? I might've got the wrong end of the stick, but it really looks like you're saying defenders play a diminished role on the pitch.

Completely disagree. There is technique in defending, not just attacking. Just because it's a different skillset doesn't mean it's less technical or anything.
