When a defender scores 91 goals come back to me.

What an idiotic comment
How can you see defenders as crucial when you literally just posted this?? I might've got the wrong end of the stick, but it really looks like you're saying defenders play a diminished role on the pitch."
No, but I get his point. The reason defenders don't get the credit they deserve is that you can theoretically go down without conceding a goal, however you can't win a title without scoring. That to me is why it is biased towards attackers.
I don't think the point of the article is that a defender should have won instead of Messi though, that would be a stupid argument. It is more that a defender has a much less likely chance to win, which is correct.
As I said earlier, my issue is not with Messi winning, he should win, he is by some distance the best player in the world and played the best last year. I am more irritated that even when recognising defenders in the team of the year, they have chosen the wrong ones.
Remember who this is chosen by, though, so I would take the whole thing with a pinch of salt.

Thank goodness Chelsea's forward prowess in the CL semi final and final was so good
The unimportant defensive players did nothing in helping the cause whatsoever. They may as well have not been there
All I'm saying is no defender should win the ballon d'or when you have players scoring 90+ goals in a year.
---------------------------------
Obviously not, but if it was the other way round, say a defender keeping 50+ clean sheets then you could argue it the other way round. But that's never going to happen, Messi's set this stupendously high standard which no player will match in a like-for-like term (i.e. assists for a midfielder/cleansheets for a keepe or defender).
The superstars are all attackers, that's the main role in football. Look at countries that barely have good players, but he good players they have i usually a striker. Uruguay have Suarez, Forlan and Cavani, name their best defenders and midfield. Not that well known players.

YouKnowWilson - Could be because attackers grab a disproportionate amount of the headlines.
For example, if it was the F.A. Cup final, Smalling saves it off the line at 0-0, then RVP scores a scrappy goal, RVP would get the credit for winning the match which I think is really unfair.
"They defended as a team" - Vik, some would say this is a talent and shouldn't be used as an argument to detract from an individual's ability...
and what ever you say, football is about putting the ball in the back of the net.
---
Surely that just goes to highlight that it isn't all about attackers. They tend to rely just as much on midfield assists and creativity as just being able to put it in the net. Likewise, it highlights that a defender's main role is to stop the opposition doing 'the most important part of football'
I like the above argument

It would appear that you are quite an idiot.
Maybe you would be more at home posting on the Arsenal board, there's a good chap.

There isn't really a stand out defender in world football at the moment. In fact, there are two stand out players in Messi and Ronaldo who are phenomenal talents.
That is true BB, but can you see it changing even after those 2 hang up their boots?

It was a joke Cannavaro won it in 06 as well. He was not the best player in the world that year, not even close.
