Yeah VC, calm down mate, it's been a fairly reasoned debate so far haha
And Vik - I think a lot of people include keepers as 'defenders' when they use it like that, I do anyway
DTKF, indeed but he was IMO one of the best.
Zidane was the best (in the world cup at least) but due to Political correctness, he was bypassed by FIFA
Why?because I have an opinion

If your opinion is going to be so utterly stupid, then yes.
What part of that don't you get?

It was a joke Cannavaro won it in 06 as well. He was not the best player in the world that year, not even close.
---------------------
Wasn't the best player but did captain Italy to the world cup. Luckily for Messi international performances have been forgotten about since then
Meh, I've always thought Cannavaro was overrated. Many better defenders. Buffon, De Rossi and Nesta were probably as good as him at the world cup, and that's just from Italy.
Henry, Dinho and Zizou were easily the best players that year.
Thunderkiss, who cares? The best player in a year shouldn't win it off of one tournament. It's a whole year ffs.

But it's not about the best player, it's just about the player with the most exposure. Three quarters of the countries that vote have no footballing pedigree, you have places like American samoa voting whose only claim to fame is losing 31-0 to Australia
I agree with that, but it still doesn't make your original point any more relevant.

Oh and I also remember a certain player called didier drogba grabbing all the headlines.
-------------
feck knows why. He was pants just dived his way through the Barca tie and basically did nothing. Was the other 10 players who were the heros and kinda makes the case for attacking players getting more credit that they deserve sometimes
Harsh, Macca - very harsh!
Drogba was a titan for Chelsea in their CL pursuit. You might not be impressed with his antics - i wasn't - but it doesn't negate his herculean efforts in aiding their cause.

TRC
What exactly did he do v Barca?
Most of the tie he was a spectator
The other players were the Herculean ones for me
Macca
Besides scoring the winner at Stamford Bridge and being an outlet for their defenders to punt the ball to, his stretching of the rules with him going down alleviated a lot of pressure.
Chelsea would not have gotten through without him. Not saying he was the main reason they went through but his presence was very much a part of their progress.
Drogba simply played Barca at their own game, and won.

Drogba played pretty well, nowhere near as good as people were making out. I think sentimentality has a lot to do with it.
Drogba used to always batter Barca and so the theme is to hype up his performance to the level he used to because they won, even though it's false.
They sure as hell wouldn't have won without him though.
Immense? He only scored the header because Boateng pushed him.
The point I am making is that the players that were doing the defensive part of the game were the main reason Chelsea got through - Not Drogba
My opinion and I thought it during the games.
What was immene about Drogba was how he turned it on at vital moments in the ties. Overall his performances were not that immense, it was just his mentality to rise to the occasion that should really be applauded.
Macca
Fair enough but Drogba's winner in the first leg did set up a lot of the belief in the players minds for the second leg.
Drogba really is one of the ultimate big game/moment players.
Macca, i think you just answered your question - Chelsea defended man-o-man-o from the front and Drogba was at the centre of it...
and RedRob pretty much surmised my point.
And i echo DTKF, Drogba is the quintessence of a 'big game player'. He steps up when required.
Ok put it like this, what defender has come close to defeding to a level similar to the level which messi attacks?
None.
There is a reason messi is frequently described as the goat, and no defenders of this generation are.
Because he's doing things on the pitch and to records that no other player in any other position can achieve.
