Truly awful idea. As well as a disregard for fans it also shows a disregard for players. The travel involved is crazy and players already suffer fatigue from international competitions when the new season starts as it is.

People are shocked that the authorities have made another ludicrous decision?

Terrible idea

How much money is it going to cost to travel and see your country? Think lots of fans won't be interested in this

Just what players need after playing a 55 game season. A trip around Europe. Fatigue. Bank money on it being the worst euros on record.

I'm sure I heard teams can only play at a venue once in the group stages too

If that's true it's utter madness

posted on 25/1/13

I'm guessing that different groups will be based in differrent countries?

If thats the case then the travel won't be that bad. It will only start in the quarters and semis and lets face it we'll be knocked out by then anyway

Why not wait and see how it is sorted before you decide it is an awful idea. It will almost certainly be across a smaller area than the US World Cup.

Host countries, if the team qualifies, will get to play 2 of the 3 group matches at home apparantly

posted on 25/1/13

USA had the World Cup in 94' and Russia are getting it in 2018, is the travelling really all that different?

Yeah good point

I have it on authority that the Uefa think-tank that headed up these proposals was managed by a gentleman by the name of Baldrick.

"I have a cunning plan".

What is the difference with this and the next world cup?

good idea

Did we patent the sport that is football, can we not somehow reclaim it back?

Group the host countries together and it might work but playing 1 game in say Norway then another 3 days later say in Bosnia will kill it for fans.

think its a good idea personally.

with the recession there are few countries who can afford all the upgraded stadiums and transport and all that.

this way at least the economic hit will be spread.

plus a final at wembley would be great

doubt the fans will have to travel much.. i am sure one team will be located in a certain part of europe.

i doubt england fans will have a game in moscow on the sunday and then play in seville on the wednesday

I don't know why everyone hates the idea so much. You go to the game in your country... I think it's brilliant.

Euro 2020 - 'Europe'
World Cup 2022 - Qatar

Football will be dead as a sport before then, but if not, these two business deals will finish it off.

It's a great idea. Might even be a permanant solution for future Euro's rather than bankrupting nations that clearly cannot afford to stage such an event.

Just another quick point...

Someone said UEFA are not thinking about the fans. Well only 3,000 England fans went to each game in Ukraine. Those who did go complained about the travel and conditions they faced in Ukraine.
Would these fans prefer going to Paris, Milan and Madrid for the 3 group games instead of Kiev and Donetsk? I would guess yes.
Another thing about the travel side is a lot of people only go for 1 game. A fair number who go to more come home between games.

Also this idea will mean more home fans, keeping interest high throughout a tournament rather than the apathy once the home team is out.

As I said before, you should wait and see how it is organised before calling it a disgrace. We may end up with games at Wembley, the Millenium Stadium and Hampden (if we get there) followed by a quarter final at the Parc de Princes. Hardly a travelling nightmare, or any more expensive than a normal tournement.

If it comes out that a nation would be scheduled to play at the Aviva Stadium Ireland, Moscow, Lisbon and Copenhagen in its first 4 games then there would be cause to complain.

But the likelihood is it will be over a far smaller area.

Also the alternative would have been Azerbaijan joint hosting with Georgia. Those worried about the fans seem happy to send them off to such a country with awful human rights.

Absolutely ridiculous idea but at least it'll stop the English with this ridiculous tirade against any country that gets awarded the international competitions.

Would depend on who the hosts are and what the draw is

If we are not a host country but draw 3 countries that are hosts, we be well fecked I reckon
