I certainly think that there has been a decline, or just a disappearance, of 'alternative rock'. White Stripes were probably the last band that fit that mould. The likes of Muse and Foo Fighters are still going but I think they've shifted genres (the latter into pop, despite Dave Grohl's persistent attempts to remind us that he is a "rockstar".

I was browsing my CDs and the other day and thought to myself, where is the next Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Tool or Pixies going to come from? In the current climate of music you just can foresee bands like that emerging any more.

I have this theory that music runs in in a kind of 20-year cycle. We had the 60s, which was mostly pop and which influenced the 80s, which in turn you can see in a lot of today's music (in style, sound and approach, very commercial). Then you also have the 50s, the start of rock, which influenced the 70s and then the 90s. So, I hold a glimmer of hope that the next decade will see a return of rock music!

White stripes were 00s though che, you could argue that we have just entered back in to a decade of pop!

For me, some of the best rock music is when it is at it's least popular ebb, like the 80s. The problem with the 90s was that for every blur or pulp, there was a northern uproar...

White Stripes were very much alone though, Melton! Most other 'bands' of the last decade were indie, which I always saw as more pop than rock. There was a big wave of post-rock, some great bands like Mogwai et al., but it never really managed to reach a wide-audience, having to struggle through the indie-pop quagmire.

It's one of those grey areas, what people class as rock or indie. I get what you mean though che. I was actually trying to think of another band in the same ilk as the white stripes, but I'm strugging! They spawned a lot of copycats, like the hives (no idea what happened to them!)

Im 23 next month, i used to care about all the rubbish and how 'its not how it was in the 90s etc.', but i just dont care anymore that its doninated by rubbish, i even like some of the rubbish these days.

I like what i like, and if people want to like stuff that i dont like then fair enough, thats called taste. Ill happily admit i like a bit of swedish house mafia alongside my blur and blondie.

I read aswell its a scientific fact to stop liking current music as much as we get older, something in the mind. That or those kinds of people are stuck up old farts who refuse to believe anything can ever be as good as back in their day!

Me i dont care, i dont follow the charts i follow my own music library, and a bit of the radio, and if theres a song playing on the radio that i know is trash but i like it, ill download it, not going to be a douche and refuse to get it just because its trash

Alt rock hasn't disappeared, it just isn't in the mainstream. There are a lot of new rock bands forming in all sub genres, you just need to expand your mind and look in unconventional places. The Internet has created a golden age for musical diversity, even if the charts don't represent that.

@ Sir Bubbly - Captain Complacency (U17162)

I feel teh same really. I don't care that there's stuff out there I don't like, because clearly others do like it. I'm just sad that the sort of music I do like isn't really being made anymore. I can count on one hand the number of 'new' (as in contemporary) releases I've bought in the past five years, I seem to be going backwards now when trying to find new stuff to listen to.

@ Ivor Hardy - It's permanent

Agreed, that's definitely the problem (it not being as mainstream). For me I've found it harder to find that sort of thing since leaving uni several years ago. Uni is a great place for music-lovers because you meet lots of different people who can introduce you to new bands, whereas now I'm not really exposed to that.

Didnt Ed Sheeran cover Pink Floyd at the Olympics and his fans all went wild online asking what 'his new tune' was called?!

Get yourself on Last FM. I have discovered so much new great music just by browsing the similar artist section of artist pages.

You get decent radio stations on itunes too. Even spotifys pretty good for similar artists.

Going back to the OP, I think the Mercury and even the MOBO's or WOMAD award shows reveal there's still some decent original music surfacing amongst the dross and Later With Jools Holland rarely disappoints.

... Altho Jools Holland is essemtially the greasy bloke who manages the fast food restaurant in Human Traffic.

Joe, you are getting old.

I was in the pub last week and made several comments along the line of "how can she walk in them shoes" and "that skirt really does look like a belt"' no I'm not 40 yet and should be getting a right good ogle at these lasses, not wondering if they will need a coat later.

Age get to us all bud, and yes these bands r Sheite but hey if you did a bit more downloading then radio head might appear more, but to be fair I don't think they will too fussed
