As I keep on saying to you, and you keep it calling it lazy.
We are 3rd net spenders over the last 5 years...........FACT
We finished 1 point from Cl last season and should have been close or qualified this season had we not given away points even though we are playing better than the opposition under Arteta. So the idea we have no path to CL is pure nonsense.
We are not as good as we used to be? We are better than what we were under Wenger in last few seasons. Definitely better than under Emery who despite his issues still almost got us to the CL.
So I think there is a lot to look forward to. And so I expect Arteta to get us to the CL. And why shouldn't I hold him to that like I did Emery?

No I didn't. Because obviously from that its not what you expect. It'll be great if we did but not what you hope for. And why shouldn't Arteta by under that pressure? Why shouldn't players be under that pressure? We are a great club.
They'll be under that pressure regardless of whether anyone thinks not getting 4th is a sackable offence
Which it isn't in itself, it all started with caveats about progress and how Top 6 with clear progress should be acceptable
btw I don't think not getting 4th is a sack-able offence if the issues are not his fault. But you cannot pre-empt that. That has to play out.
"We are 3rd net spenders over the last 5 years...........FACT"
This has no bearing on what Arteta can do for us this Summer, though. The longer we are out of the CL, he will not be able to spend as much as that. He's even said this in his press conferences we may not have much to spend - so this is an irrelevant point when it comes to what he will be able to do this Summer.
"So the idea we have no path to CL is pure nonsense."
I didn't say this - I said we have no CLEAR path. That is true. Otherwise we wouldn't be worried about the other teams. If you're just going to casually omit words when quoting me or paraphrasing me, then I will pull you up on it.
"We are not as good as we used to be? We are better than what we were under Wenger in last few seasons. Definitely better than under Emery who despite his issues still almost got us to the CL"
We are having our worst season in 26 years, this will be our lowest points tally and league finish since 1994/95. This is not better than Emery's last season or Wenger's final season. Though I acknowledge we are still paying the price at present for some of the Wenger-regime decisions. How is this even a controversial point?
" Because obviously from that its not what you expect. It'll be great if we did but not what you hope for."
Thank you for telling me what I think, J99. I really appreciate you doing that. I'm so glad that someone as condescending as you is able to tell me what I'm feeling better than myself.
Why would I not 'hope' for us to do well? Seriously, do you even think about what you write? What an absolute mess of a post.

---------------------------------
That is true but what do you expect him to say? We have loads of money? And you saw how we beat City and Liverpool. We don't need drastic surgery despite what pundits make out. Its their job to be critical. But as fans we shouldn't fall for their instant judgements.
I didn't say this - I said we have no CLEAR path
-----------------------------------
Whats the difference? I keep on saying we haven't been that far away last season or even this season despite our issues off the pitch which doesn't convince you at all.
How is this even a controversial point?
------------------------------------
Because it implies we haven't progressed under Arteta when we clearly have. If our squad has been missing out on CL by a few points in the recent past and now progressed under Arteta, doesn't that make us closer to back in CL places? A clear path as you suggest doesn't exist, really when it does?
Thank you for telling me what I think, J99
------------------------------------------------
Thats how it comes across to me from what you have written. If thats not what you meant then I apologise. I just believe that fans who have been following what has happened to us over the last 5 years shouldn't ape media pundits talking points when they have a cash agenda and don't actually watch us that often. And if you really think we are so far off is very disappointing!
J99,
Right, this is my final post on this because I don't want to keep going round in circles with you. I'm sorry for having digs at you throughout but I really dislike it when people insinuate that I don't love or I don't want the club to do well. Of course I do. I wouldn't be here discussing these issues if I didn't!
I know we played well vs City, and defensively were gr8 against Liverpool, but I don't think that's how Arteta wants us to play in the long run. He wants to close the gap that he admits is enormous. To close that gap, we need quality players - that doesn't necessarily mean we need to spend shiiit loads of money, but it does mean our recruitment needs to be good and we need to have a clear strategy for who we want to get. And how Arteta believes he can improve them.
I acknowledge we have progressed under Arteta, but objectively speaking, this will be our worst season for 25 years and this crop of players will go down in history as being associated with that - there are obviously mitigating factors, but as I expect the other teams we're competing with to spend big, we will need to proactive too so we don't fall behind the pack.
Me saying there's no clear path is true. We have a number of competitors who are looking to improve and who will want to break into the top 4 - e.g. Leicester, Wolves. So we need to be on our toes. I'm not saying we can't get CL, but it means we need a lot of things to go in our favour.
I think we are better than the league table suggests, but I don't believe we're a CL quality side currently. That can change this Summer though and I hope it does. Which is why I believe ingoings and outgoings are key.
Arteta is playing down our chances next season. He knows he has a young squad and doesn't want the pressure to get to them. But that shouldn't be our attitude or expectation. Arsenal are the 3rd biggest club in England. I don't care what Man City, or Chelsea say. Spending loads of money doesn't always bring success, we have done so and not got closer over the last 5 years. In the link I gave you, City had spent £600m+ in the last 5 years and have been crushed by Liverpool. Chelsea have hardly spent a lot recently, partly because of their suspension but are going to qualify for the CL again and have been winning trophies. Look at Man Utd's spending and where they are.
Like I stated in the other thread. I think the basis of any winning team should be young players committed to the cause. Then a sprinkling of older heads gets you there.
Leicester and Wolves are not better than us. Even you must see that. Spurs are hamstrung by having to stay within budgets or they wouldn't begging loans from the taxpayers. Man U have a very average manager. Look at the money they have spent and how they lost to Chelsea.
You are really bigging up teams that don't deserve it.
