Refs and Assistant Refs not making big calls because of the VAR backup would be disastrous in a fast paced game like football

Manager challenges even worse, what's the time threshold? Does it have to be in that passage of play? Do they have to wait for the ball to go out before they appeal?

The metric is awful

We beat City because they got a VAR pen at 1-0

We beat Brighton because Martinelli's equaliser was ruled offside

Also funny that J99 says refs are fine, it's VAR, when the refs make the judgement on VAR

RAGING

The biggest robbery was against City at home.

Right protecting their goof. If the ref in the stadium does it in front of a crowd its going to be pretty hard for him to contradict himself down the line with a similar decision at another game. ergo you suddenly start getting consistency.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What you will get is refs with no responsibility to make big calls, ergo making no big calls. Then it becomes a game of chance for the challenges, which will have to surely be made in a split second.
Cricket umpires have declined since player reviews happened, free not to make a call. Saw NFL umpires being criticised for similar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Cricket umpires reduced because of covid and travelling around the world. A new group are being introduced now by ICC. The NFL refs have no issue to their appeal. In fact they are getting paid a lot of money and its become a career.

All other Sports do it one way for the reasons I have outlined in our discussion and football complain why VAR doesn't work. The reasons in my opinion are obvious. I think its more demoralising for refs having another hidden ref miles away calling him out. Not a group of refs or the head of refereeing. But one ref who may have far less experince and competency than they do.

So VAR doesn't work because of the on field refs feelings?

posted on 26/5/22

Because the VAR refs are hesitant to call out their friends. So poor decisions are left unchallenged and sometimes missed altogether.

I'll leave it that cause this is now devolving into a WUM.

We haven't had many crucial incorrect decisions go against us since the introduction of VAR.

The problems come from the "50/50s", it's not that the decision is wrong it's that we have been on the receiving end of a disproportionate number of calls against us. For Man City you'd be talking the highest positive extreme and for us one of the most negative swings.

Consistency is the problem and the decisions are rarely black or white but can shape seasons as much as incorrect decisions used to pre VAR

It certainly is, I can't believe anyone really feels a refs feelings are being protected in favour of correct calls. Not even you

I personally think what we need to help with the standard of reffing is some sort of independent regulator

Who said its their feelings? Its how it reflects on an organisation when their refs are constantly called out for making mistakes.

Why do you think PGMOL introduced/emphasised "clear and obvious" language for VAR? All so it would excuse why some decisions were looked at by VAR and others weren't when all should have been with equal vigour.
