The fact you are even bringing up our £105m midfielder in a conversation about the defence shows the glaring weakness.
-------------------------------------------
Already said we are CB short. btw it's never been made clear why Rice preferred Arsenal to City and one theory was that Pep was buying Rice for the CB role because Stones doing that worked for him last season, and he wanted a player more capable player in that hybrid position. They then bought Gvardiol after Rice turned them down. So obviously, Rice wants to stay in midfield.

But we are talking of an emergency. I don't think Arteta has any intention of doing that in any other case. Edu/Arteta both said they want to stop bringing in players for the sake of it. So they probably ran all contingencies and were satisfied. Even though I think we are one CB short!

Holding fee was £1m with £2.5m in add ons. We have potentially made a loss on him

posted on 2/9/23

Holding is on £3m a season. And we were not intending to trigger his option (or we wouldn't be selling him). So by selling him we saved £3m and whatever we got for his last season. Hodgson already called him a squad player. Consider what other managers think of him when even a club that finishes in the bottom half doesn't consider him a starter!

We are just horrendous at selling any of our players for big fees.

Probably one of the worst in the league. Balogun being our biggest sale at 35M is a joke

posted on 2/9/23

Yeah, should have been looking for at least £80m for a player Bats once called worse than Mustafi on one leg...

Cedric madness when needed.

Tbh selling any PL proven player for less than 10mill nowadays is a shocker. Seems like the market for really average to bad players hasn’t gone up all that much

We spent £35m on Mustafi lol. So if one legged Mustafi is the barometer then Holding should still go for around £10m+

It's the current market. A Holdinho would have made us at least 10M

I really like Arsenal's transfer window. We got more than decent players in. Back luck with Timber's injury.

Due to Timber's injury we are still short at the back but as a serious club you can't buy all the time. Time to believe in our youngsters and give them a chance. That is what a serious club have to do.

Pepe and Cedric staying arent the end of the world. Still could move on to Saudi though.

Arteta didn't give the youngsters a chance in the Europa or domestic cups last season, didn't integrate them into the squad in pre-season, but now they will be given a chance?

Let's see what happens against Brentford in the EFL, but haven't see Arteta promoting academy players thus far.

So throw totally unprepared for senior football kids in? Probably away at the Etihad or Anfield...

Plus he is more likely to play Partey RB, Rice and Elneny CB and Jorginho inverted LB with Havertz DM.

Of course we will go for our strongest team possible and rotate as much as we can. We develop players in our own academy. So slowly intergrate the best of them into the first team. Walters for example who is training with our first team.....why not.

I was talking about an injury crisis. Hope we avoid it though until January where we are able to add if necessary.

Again, what evidence is there that Arteta will "rotate as much as we can". All the evidence suggests he won't do that at all.
Walters doesn't train with the first team, he has the odd session to make up the numbers, but he is more often than not with the u21s.

Scrutinizing the merits of a particular sale misses the point. Any review of our player trading on a broader, systemic level over the last decade or so shows Arsenal are easily one of the worst team in the league in getting value for players they sell on, and in many cases even terminating contracts for players that other clubs eventually get value for (like Barca with Aubameyang).

Whether it's because we're buying the wrong profile of players and poor scouting, not managing them properly (Arteta tends to make out-of-favour players rot so much on the bench), paying too high wages that put off other teams or whatever reason, it's a very consistent pattern with us, and the consistent trend is the issue. We take too many big losses on the squad year after year after year that more prudent figures like Levy wouldn't tolerate and we're far too cavalier about it. It's actually pretty understated how much we've underachieved given our net investments in the squad year after year. We've spent all this money this season, but how many fans really have any confidence that we're actually a better team than last season?

I have no problem with Holding leaving for next to nothing (he seemed a prime candidate to be paid off to actually leave us). I've always said he'd not look out of place in a mid-table Championship club. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he warms the bench at any PL club.

If you spend over £200m as we have, your aspirations should probably be higher than "we got more than decent players in", don't you think?

Josh Kroenke laid out the buying strategy last season. Essentially, we will concentrate on buying quality starters now that we are back in the Champions League. That way, those who were starting will automatically become covering players, or they will leave.

Rice? Sure. He's looked more than decent. West Ham still got the better deal getting us to part with a 9-figure sum for him.

Havertz hasn't looked decent.

Liked what I've seen of Timber, but one match isn't enough to make judgements on anyone and he's unfortunately now going to be battling a very disruptive long-term injury. Was impressed the first time I saw Kolasinac too.

Wouldn't say we've seen anything from this window to really get us excited.
