I don't know what point I'm missing. We've spent far too much money for what seems to be marginal gains at best (could get a lot worse cos the early signs aren't encouraging).

The point that I believe you are missing is that we are starting from a strong position and not like the past when our squad needed a lot of repair. So you cannot and in my opinion should not expect a lot of signings. We simply did not need major surgery and the team did not need to be torn up.

So I think you have to compare like for like. Now at the moment I agree that Havertz has looked poor when you compare to Xhaka's last season. But then again, it's only been 3 games, and you cannot really assess what contribution he will make until he has time to settle and regain some of his confidence.

And actually it's a similar situation with Rice. I feel Arteta is almost compensating our attacking play by trying to also shoe horn in Partey until Rice is up to speed.

Our younger players are also not quite up to pace. Saka is Saka, but both Odegaard and Martinelli haven't even hit last season's form, let alone expected further development.
