I thought he brought Merino to win duels high up the pitch, but tbh I haven't really seen any of that or better passing and tempo control so who knows.

I think it is a bit of both. Like Xhaka complemented Partey further forward. Arsenal were hovering around Zubimendi and Guimares, but they are very expensive.

I think the jury is completely out on Merino. He hasn't really played with Rice and Odegaard in a midfield three. The theory is sound but like so many of Arteta/Edu purchases haven't really worked out the way they thought so who knows? One reason why Arsenal need to be careful and quick on who they appoint as the new Dof.

Yeah I think given his age, profile and PL experience we probably expected him to hit the ground running but he's not really shown us anything vaguely special yet. Sure he started with an injury but he's been back a while now.
