Bayern do need Lewandowski. He is better than Mandzukic and it will weaken Dortmund severely. Just because Bayern are sitting on top doesn't mean they should stop strengthening.
=================
This is most prob the thinking of top brass @ Munich. Buy to weaken the opposition. In fact this has been the Bayern MO for decades.
But they don't 'need' him from a footballing POV as Lewa's only slightly better than Mandzukic.

Mandzukic is awful. He's not a patch on Lewandowski. I'd seriously put Giroud ahead of him. I don't rate him at all.

This will surely please our friend GT.
IMO, Mandzukic is more mobile than Giroud and probably slightly more lethal in front of the goal. However, apart from his goals, he doesn't bring anything else to the game.

But both are somewhat below the top bracket (think Ibra, Falcao, Cavani, Suarez, RVP).

Mandzukic is a good player. Nothing special. But he's better than Giroud.

Sadly, we wont sign a world class striker

Not needed the money is not the issue. It hasn't been for Dortmund for years. The issue is, are they willing to see another one of their players leave them for their bitter rivals?

They know they would lose Lewan to Bayern next summer.

As I said yesterday that reports from Germany saying that Guardiola doesnt want Lewan at Bayern. I think Guardiola philosophy require more midfielders rather strikers. He is willing to put Müller as a false no.9 upfront than buying a CF. The German media claim that Lewan didnt change his opinion and wants to move to Bayern for free next summer.

Read a while ago that he didn't want Goetze either, and his opinion was shunned by the Bayern Hierarchy.
_________

That is wrong. Guardiola is a fanboy of Götze.

The Bayern top brass see it their way and will go for Lewa whether Pep wants it or not.

Pep is quite peculiar about what he wants for particular roles. He wanted a mobile DM, hence put Lahm as a DM (not a fan of it but this is not the point here).

He also wants a Messi upfront and is quite fixated on that. Hence he has attempted putting Gotze and even Shaqiri up front, pushing Mandzukic.. wait for it.. out wide on the left. Think we might see more of such experiments in the future, possibly to Bayern's and Pep's own detriment.

Merte could miss today's game in Sweden. He has a cold. Hopefully true....
