Taken apart by Sevilla in the league. It was avoidable but Kanoute opened the scoring from a corner and added another after the break with a great finish. He then set up Fabiano to put them out of sight. At least Jonathan de Guzman curled in a nice consolation goal, but we've only got one win in the first six league games.

Final qualifier against Roma. Zabaleta's low cross is palmed out to Podolski to tap in a late winner which sees us top the group ahead of Real Madrid.

Just what we need, a game against the worst team in the league. Riki sets up Garcia to give us an early lead from outside the box. Portillo threatens for Gimnastic, but Pablo's cross finds Jonathan de Guzman who makes it 2-0.

Trickier match away at Barca. Ramon saves from Messi, while John and Valzzak head against the bar for either side as it ends goalless.

Another draw away at Bilbao; Podolski cancelling out Milevskyy's opener with a late goal.

It looks like we'll finally get past the first round of the cup. John set up dos Santos and Arizmendi as well as scoring two of his own as we beat Levante 4-0 in the first leg.

Much needed second win in the league against Olympiakos. Hleb gets an uncharacteristic header from Alcantara, but then his trademark dribbling sees him get another. Nikopolidis makes two great saves from his free kicks, before the unstoppable Hleb scores his third and fourth of the match. John makes it 5-0 but we can't keep the clean sheet as Konstantinou curls in a consolation.

Generally yes.

First EC group game is Marseille. Bodipo heads us 1-0 up from Hleb's corner and despite Luyindula capitalising on slack defending, Hleb's pass is fired in by John to get us the 2-1 win.

Followed by a goalless draw in the league at Espanyol, featuring a staunch defensive display from beyond the grave by Dani Jarque. League form not great, we're mid-table.

Away at Lyon in the EC, Carew gets them off to a flying start but we get back in it as Serrano's corner is headed in by John. Solskjaer can't beat Vercoutre from close range, but makes amends by heading in Capdevila's cross to win it for us

We get an early bit of luck against Villarreal as Gonzalo puts the ball into his own net. Serrano hits the post but we have to keep out a seige in the second half. Ugly 1-0 win.

A weakened team gets the job done in the second leg against Levante. Riki sets up Solskjear to score on two occasions. We win 6-0 on aggregate. Ramon in our goal didn't have a single touch of the ball.

The first team returns against Real Madrid, but it's yet another goal for van Nistelrooy as he heads in Robinho's cross. Podolski forces a stunning Casillas save before Reyes puts them 2-0 up. Ramos' brilliant volley is saved, but RVN is on hand for the rebound. Bodipo finds Podolski who pulls one back from close range, but Robinho floats in another high ball, you-know-who heads is and Aouate fumbles it in. Hat-trick for horse face, 4-1 loss.

Third EC game is Bayern at home. Munua saves from Hargreaves and van Bommel before Serrano scores. Hleb sets up Jonathan de Guzman to score on the turn. 2-0.

Away at Valencia in the league. Villa's chip goes just wide and Miguel hits the bar as they trouble us early on. Serrano turns the tide by stealing the ball, dummying the keeper and making it 1-0. John hits the post in the first half and strikes a venomous volley against the bar in the second, before setting up Arizmendi to seal it late on. Even later, Capdevila swings in a cross and John adds gloss to the scoreline with a glancing header. 3-0

Fourth group game is at Marseille. Niang scores from close range. We have plenty of chances and eventually Serrano sets up Valeron to level. However, Hleb is in the wrong place at the wrong time as Munua's attempted clearance cannons in off him. Podolski hits the post but Marseille extend their lead through Niang late on. 3-1, our 100% record is gone.

Last league match before the transfer window against Beits. Good fortune as a Rivas own goal makes it 1-0. Sergio's through ball manages to hit the post, while Doblas makes a couple of great saves from Hleb. Late on, some good work from Jonathan de Guzman allows Bodipo to grab his first league goal of the season and make it 1-0. We're 6th in the league after 15 games.

Home leg of the cup quarter against Bilbao. Danobeitia scores and Maldonado hits the bar as they start strongly. Podolski and Riki test the keeper, the latter also heading against the bar. We'll have to turn around the 1-0 loss.

The question is did I sign a CPU-generated youth player because he's called Mattsson? Not entirely, he's 17 and his stats are quite good

Hot dang, he's gone into the squad and he's just below Cristian on the list. Cristian Mattsson. It's a misspelled sign!

The second half of the season begins at Porto. Serrano gives it to Solskjaer who makes no mistake with an emphatic finish. Babic twice hits the woodwork, but Serrano's dangerous pass finds Bodipo who dribbles into the net. 2-0.

Cup away leg at Bilbao. We're 1-0 down on aggregate, but Jonathan de Guzman sees to that by helping the ball in after a scramble. It goes to extra time, Capdevila closest to a winner from distance, but a penalty shootout is needed.

With the score at 3-3 after 5 pens each, Orbaiz scored his and Jonathan de Guzman, who scored our only goal, hit the bar. We go out at the quarters.

He had a bit longer than usual but Garcia completed an unheard of 33 passes in that match

Alvaro's own goal gives us the perfect start against Levante, and it's followed up by Estoyanoff's individual goal. Dos Santos sets up Sergio to make it 3-0, but Jason Roberts () gets one back.

Lyon in the fifth EC match. Pablo gives it away for Källström to put them in front, but Jonathan de Guzman's goal levels matters. The 1-1 draw sees us through with a game to spare.

Poor anticipation sees Mantorras head the winning goal for Benfica as we lose our fourth game in the league.

Final group game agains already-eliminated Bayern. Salihovic heads them in front, but Serrano squares for John to equalise. Carini keeps out Serrano, while Ramon makes a double save from Jenas (yes, he really does play for Bayern ). 1-1 is a fair result.

Diego Milito looks threatening in the early stages at Zaragoza, hitting the woodwork. In the second half Podolski plays a lovely through ball and John puts us ahead, but Park Ji-Sung fires in an equaliser. It looks like Estoyanoff has wasted our best chance, but Serrano plays a dangerous low ball and Podolski gets a late winner.

Goalless draws with Atletico and Sevilla either side of the EC home leg against Man United. We start well but Zidane (not even regenerated, he's still going ) picks out Saha who scores in a crowd of players. United much sharper, could've been more if not for Munua.

To Old Trafford. We get straight back in the tie thanks to John's strike from Raul Garcia's pass. United quickly retake the lead as Smith heads in from Ronaldo's corner, and van der Vaart takes his opportunity to put them 3-1 up on aggregate. We keep going, Garcia takes the game by the scruff of the neck and fires in and Sergio coolly tucks home a second half penalty. Either side could've scored next, but John sealed it with a late goal. 4-2 win, 4-3 on aggregate

Riki sets up Bodipo to get the only goal at Gimnastic. Followed by Barcelona, top of the league, at home, and despite the best efforts of Messi, Garcia set up Sergio for the winning goal on his 100th ML appearance.

Next, we face Bilbao who knocked us out of the cup. Milevskyy buries an early chace to put them ahead, while we can't get any first-half chance on target. We keep getting closer, Riki hits the post while John's effort crashes off the bar. Eventually Jonathan de Guzman's corner finds an unmarked Valeron to nod us level. It looks like we've got a point, but right at the end dos Santos skips down the left and cuts back to Riki to tap in his first of the season for 2-1

Away at Olympiakos. Riki heads against the bar, then converts two penalties in quick succession. Olympiakos get one back as Georgatos loops in a shot, but Jonathan tees up Riki to blast in for his hat-trick. Castillo gets them back in it again, and Julian takes a red card for the team, but we hold on for the 3-2 win.

EC semi-final away leg at Inter. It's a game of few chances, John can't get us an away goal as he hits the bar with the goal at his mercy. Stankovic punishes us latching onto Burdisso's dinked pass and finishing. Even later on, Ibrahimovic runs clear, hits the post but reacts quickest to put it into the empty net. 2-0 loss, it'll be difficult to turn around with no away goals.

Goalless draw against Espanyol ahead of the second leg, Zabaleta coming closest with a shot off the bar.

Inter start well with Figo forcing a save from Aouate, but then we pile on the pressure. Jonathan de Guzman hits the post and Cesar makes great saves from Sergio and Coloccini (who's playing in midfield, that's how good his stats are, meaning he gets up for corners). Coloccini grabbed his first ML goal by heading in Hleb's corner and although Podolski's header was blocked on the line we couldn't get the second goal. 2-1 aggregate loss, Inter go through to face Milan in the final

posted on 3/8/14

Estoyanoff sets up dos Santos to curl in the winner against Villarreal. Meanwhile, Milan beat Inter to win the European Championship. John finishes as joint top scorer with 5, while Hleb joins Figo with 4 assists. Liverpool win the Masters Cup.

We face D1 Cup winners Real Madrid. Serrano sets up Podolski for a dream start and Hleb's accurate shot seals a 2-0 win. We move above both Madrid and Valencia into 2nd, and we face the latter next.

Pablo's cross is headed in by Bodipo, but quickfire goals from Morientes and Joaquin look like sending Valencia back up the table. Sergio and Julian are denied by Butelle, but deep into injury time Cristian slides to get the ball back and Solskjaer fires in a shot from 25 yards that just about gets past the keeper to spark celebrations Still in 3rd ahead of the final match.

Away at Betis in the final game, and Jonathan de Guzman scores an easy winner on the rebound.

We finish the season in third again. Barcelona win the league with 71 points. Madrid second with 59, we trail with 58 and Valencia are on 57. Atletico and Bilbao 5th and 6th.

We didn't score or concede as many as last season. John had a full season and was our leading scorer with 6 but couldn't match last season's loan tally. We spread the goals round more, with Hleb, Podolski, Bodipo, Riki, Solskjaer and Jonathan DG the main contributors. Serrano our the top assistant again with 4. Nowhere near the leaders this time (Ronaldo 24 goals, Riquelme 8 assists).

Let Solskjaer and Hurtado go on a free because they're old, Juan Rodriguez because he's not very good. Got a good offer so let Riki go to Espanyol.
