if he were some nobody instead of a former footballer, nobody would care. if he were any other race or nationality, nobody would care either.

Nobodies get sectioned and put in dependence rehabilitation programs too you know... And organisations such as AA are self-funded so I don't know where the taxpayer comes in there.

but they certainly wouldn't get the sheer number of second chances and handouts gazza has received.
and alcoholics anonymous have already tried and failed to assist this lout... the only thing left is for him to be sectioned, and that would be at the expense of the nhs.

So just leave him to die then?
Of course it is a disease

That's hugely debatable. Eventually everything will be classified as some sort of mental illness, I'm sure; for example, being naughty is not my kid's fault, he's got ADHD, right? It takes too much responsibility away from the individual (or indeed their parents in this example).
If you don't want to drink any more, stop drinking. Drinking itself not an illness, he wasn't born with any knowledge of alcohol. His problem is probably some other issue, like depression. But if he can't help himself, what more can you do? It's sad, but I'm sure there are thousands of people in this position that haven't had international football careers, that we don't spare a thought for.

if he's not willing to accept help, then let him drink himself to death by all means. to call his state an illness is an insult to those who would do anything for a cure for real illnesses.
expense of the nhs
true but i think he paid a lot more taxes than most
"to call his state an illness is an insult to those who would do anything for a cure for real illnesses."
Wow, so now illness has to qualify for treatment? Would you kick out all the lung cancer, skin cancer, sport injury, drunken punch-up, road accidents for those that caused the crash patients too? Where would this filtering of care end?
Alcoholism is a disease and just because people have a choice does not stop it from being so.
You could choose to remain a virgin all your life but HIV/Aids is still a disease. If someone chooses to have unprotected regularly with different people it may be their fault but it's still a disease.

but what about all the times he's been arrested for being drunk and disorderly, or been stopped for driving while over the legal limit? not to mention the amount of times he's had his stomach pumped and taken up a bed in a&e from someone with more urgent needs.
if he gets sectioned, chances are he'll be out again within weeks, and he'll run the risk of mowing down an innocent person because he's gotten behind the wheel while drunk - again.
He has an addiction, an addiction that will cut his life short. Add to that his mental instability... The bloke needs help, he obviously cannot help himself.

those are real ailments and diseases that deserve treatment. having no willpower and drinking yourself to death because it's too hard to say no is a completely different issue.

HIV/AIDS isn't exclusively sexually transmitted, as it can be passed down to children through carrying parents (not always, but sometimes).
Such a sad story with Gazza. Hope he gets better.

I realise that but there are certain comments here that are suggesting if you inflict something apon yourself it should not be classed as a disease.
Lung Cancer is a disease. If you get it through passive smoking or other reason then accepted but if you get it from addiction through smoking then it doesn't count. This logic just doesn't make sense.

i guess your right just leave him in the gutter with the rest of the no lifes
the sad thing is that's what i see happening with him
It's an addiction and just like most addictions it's not as simple as saying "I want to stop" and being able to quit just like that. He's been given support by friends, family, ex-footballers etc but it's not enough. He has to be sectioned. Might seem like tough love on his families part but if they want to see him get better its their only choice. 1 month in a clinic before letting him roam free obviously doesn't do the trick because himself has said he can't guarantee he won't get back on the booze

I always thought you were one of the smart ones KPPR, maybe you are but you're also some kind of NHS-Názi*.
Those are no more 'real ailments' than the effects of alcoholism, or for that matter depression. You COULD word any of those in my list in your way - "not enough will power to avoid sitting in the sun without protectio", "avoid smoking", "avoid contact sport", "avoid being a drunken ásshole", "avoid driving like an idiot", etc, etc.
*This is a joke.
I'm with the majority on here. I have no sympathy for him anymore because the guy has had to many chances and lifelines from other people. Why should he consistently get special treatment when he literally p isses it up the wall in every way possible. As for his "friend" Ronny Irani the talksport presenter. Sorry but who the f uck are you? This winds me up more than anything where people pretend to be friends with everyone. I wouldn't be suprised if Gazza didn't know who the f uck Irani was.
as for the 'britons are good people' thing... if he were some nobody instead of a former footballer, nobody would care. if he were any other race or nationality, nobody would care either.

Does Gazza even know who Ronnie Irani is? Seems to me he just jumped on the bandwagon. Wants to make a name for himself.
As for Gazza, if Gazza had liver failure through no fault of his own. That is sad yes
If Gazza ends up having liver failure through all this drinking which started back years ago, then no, that's not sad for me. Its his own fault. He had control of his own drinkning way back but did he stop? Nope. He carried on and carried on to where is now.

I urge any person to read Gazza's book and then come back to me and tell me he's had 'enough chances'
fack off! he needs help! it's a two way street I understand this but his problems stem so deep
