Laugh all you want about getting him on a free, he was superb for Milan in the 2nd half of last season, exactly what we need in DM.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
never understood why wenger let him go in the first place. It was decisions like that the made van persie look to move away.
When world class talent is available, you'd be a fool not to make a move
I'm willing to wager decent money that come May.....all the gooners will be moaning as to why Wenger didn't buy a world class defender and invest in a top class goalkeeper like Begovic for example.
Great signing but it's a needless signing, Arsenal are still $hit overall and won't make top 4
Nah, we would of suggested someone like Bender or Flamini.
After one of those had been signed, we might of also realised we created 2 chances in the whole game, so thought perhaps we need to add some creativity?
--------------------------
But you did have Cazorla to come into the team, right? He didn't start that game and didnt look fully fit when he came on.
I would have thought a CF, a CB, a DM (ok, you got Flamini) and possibly a wide man would have been higher up the priority list.
I'm not saying Ozil isn't world class or a great signing. He is for sure.
What I'm saying is that I don't think Ozil alone will take you that much closer to the big trophies. Ozil plus a good defender or 2 and goalkeeper and maybe you would though.
So signing a world class player to address our lack of creativity when cazorla is nullifed is a needless signing...
Unlocking right defences was a massive problem for Arsenal last season. Ozil will help fix that.
They also were lacking the quality in numbers in attack. Walcott and Podolski are effective players, and I like Rosicky, but there was far too much pressure on Cazorla to provide the creativity for the side.
And in the second half of the season their attack looked very blunt. I think part of that was down to them being a little more cautious in matches and say deeper. This helped their defensive record but they were scoring less goals.
Very much like ourselves in the latter half of the season.
I don't buy into this theory that he's not what they needed. Teams always need world class player. Especially in attack. As those are the players that make the difference.
As we well know from last season.
Darren you're a breath of fresh air mate, not spouting rubbish like stretford.
OP, a self-confessed 'proper' United fan carps about 'Ozil Mania'.
What does he do? He goes and writes an article about Ozil adding to the mania.
Puzzling.
It is disappointing that United fans are suddenly involved in a game of one-upmanship with Arsenal. I like Ozil, he is a fabulous player but i am not remotely worried about Arsenal as they will not finish above United.
What I'm saying is that I don't think Ozil alone will take you that much closer to the big trophies. Ozil plus a good defender or 2 and goalkeeper and maybe you would though.
==========================================
And this is the point.
We conceded less than you last year.
Since then, Sagna has finally got back to his best pre-leg break form, and looks very good. We signed Monreal in January, who is excellent backup/rotation for Gibbs.
We've signed Flamini, who like I say was very good for Milan after he got over his injury and got back in the team in January.
We've loaned Viviano, who was Fiorentina's first choice GK in Serie A.
Sure, a Hummels or Thiago Silva would of been great, but I'm happy with what we've done.
Whereas I watched you guys get comfortably held at arms length by Liverpool, struggle to create anything against Chelsea at home, and wonder why you feel able to give us advice?
Gooners. Will Ozil be replacing Podolski in the front three or do you see him playing as an attacking midfielder?
I think the priority for Arsenal should have been a defensive midfielder in the Gilberto mould but there defence and team shape needs a little bit of tweaking rather than a mass overhaul, not over committing full backs, tracking runners etc.
I agree that Arsenal don't NEED Ozil but it will be brilliant to watch a player like him every week in the Premier League.
Tbh I don't think any other team in the premiership would have broken down Mou's 4-6-0 formation either, he stopped Barca using it with an inferior inter side.
When has away to anfield been an easy game for any of the big teams?

Never. But that's not the point. Moyes was comfortably outwitted by BR, they got the early goal and then were happy to let you have the ball but create nothing. I can't remember seeing a United team huff and puff so much without doing anything.
Chris H, I dont care what the stats say about last season, I dont bloody care that you conceded less than Utd or that Utd's defence was the 7th best in the league. Your defence is not good. End of.

And whilst you brought it up.....I never stated once that Ozil wasn't a great player or singing in the article if you actually cared to read it. He's a great player. I merely suggested that I believed Arsenal had more pressing problems than AM.
With the players we had missing (or on the bench not match fit) it shouldn't really be a surprise.... Especially for what always is a tough game for us...
I know many of the gunners talk rubbish on here and have gone overboard with how much of a difference Ozil will make, however, I think many are underrating g how much of an improvement Ozil will make.
People look at the goal stats and say Ozil wasn't needed as they had no problems scoring goals. But these are the same people that are saying we lack creativity despite wing comfortably the top scorers in the league.
The fact remains is that both United and Arsenal have lacked creativity despite scoring lots of goals.
Sounds silly to say but when you watch both of the teams regularly you can see that this is a fact.
You have more pressing problems than getting a mid to play alongside carrick (Fellaini). Your wingers are crap and kagawa has vanished from the the planet.
Darren, absolutely spot on.

I'm pretty sure most who have brought forward the view the OP has watched Arsenal a maximum of 3 or 4 times last year.
You simply cannot think we don't have a problem creating chances if you watch us any more than that.
As for the Villa game, if we'd played Flamini or Arteta instead of Ramsey or Wilshere, not a chance in hell we are conceding three. Either of those two wouldn't just let Agbonlahor run straight into the area, dead central, from 35 yards out.
