Januzaj for England?

We haven't done it any time recently to my knowledge......

Hargreaves is as close as we come but he had an English parent or grandparent so that doesn't really count. Portugal make the best use of it.

Why would he wait 5 years to play international football? He looks decent he would be mad to turn down Belgium with the players they are producing.

They are building a great international side.

And England?

Sterling moved here at age 5, he grew up here i dont see a problem with it.

Zaha moved here when he was 4.

its a bit different to being 16...

Belguim are hugely overrated if you ask me, good young team yes but they aren't going to do much over the coming years it is just a spectacular team considering the size of Belguim and its recent teams.

I was going to say, I don't actually think he is eligible for playing for England unless they change the criteria. There was talk of them doing it three years ago, but I didn't think it went through.

The home countries eligibility rules are different to FIFAs, they are more stringent in that there needs to be a grand parental link to qualify.

Why would he even want to play for England? We're sh|te. We do like to give young winger, who have done absolutely nothing a few caps tho.

Zaha and The OX pop straight to mind.

My point was why would he wait that long when he could be playing now for Belgium.

I should have worded it better sorry.

I really don't see there being much difference. In terms of fifa it's still born overseas so the player has to decide which country. The point being, England do use the rules when it benefits

But id have no problem saying hes english, he grew up here....

A kid who has lived here since he was 5 is practically English IMO. What effect is nationality aside from the way your parents raise you and your daily interaction with people outside your family?

A lot of his friends and people he has spent time with over the years have likely been mostly English.

That's not the issue though. It's a matter of England using the fifa rules just like anyone else

Moving to England at the age of 5 with your family to start a new life here is completely different to moving to England 2 years ago because a football club bought you.

I'm sure Sterling has a great emotional attachment to England having lived here the majority of his life and probably feels very English. Januzaj I would imagine feels very much Belgian seeing as he was born, grew up and studied there.

We have always had additional criteria to FIFA though due to us being a sovereign state with four countries represented. As I said, I heard they might change it a few years ago but thought that was education related. I may have missed it though.

What are the differences? Outside of channel islanders rules being different are the nationality rules not the same?

If Senna can play for Spain and help kick start their dominance of football I don't see why people are so precious about Januzaj doing the same!

Senna only qualified at age 30.

A few more years required to be eligible for the national team, that's about it isn't it?

posted on 6/10/13

Isn't it just the same rule everywhere? 5 years residency and you can make the switch?

Up to 2009, you had to have either a parental or grandparental link. Scotland wanted to change it so that if someone was in the education system for a set amount of time, then they could be eligible too. Not sure if that went through though.

We have always been different to FIFAs rules, we may have changed them over the last few years though and I didn't spot it.

It's the reason Giggs was never actually eligible for England, for example.

If it is 3 years from now then he'd only miss one tournament (next year) which he probably wouldn't have played in anyway.

How does Rooney qualify?

FIFA World Rankings:

6 = Belgium
17 = England
45 = Albania
49 = Turkey

Born in Belgium who are a decent team currently ranked top 10 in the world. Play in the World Cup.

Not going to be a difficult choice is it?

Although couldn't give a monkeys as long as United get him to re-sign.

Don't think that's true, pretty sure Giggs' father is English. He chose Wales because he has always considered himself Welsh rather than English that's all and he played for English school boys purely because he studied at an English school.

It's pretty desperate from England, but it's a position where England have been desperate for a long time.
