So you're ultimately saying that if I'm a full back and Milner is coming on in front of me, it means I've done a poor job?

We aren't going to get to the final.
If you're faced with a game where England will have less possession, the idea of playing an attacking full back over your best defensive full back is, to me, wrong.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which is why I said vs a Spain or Italy of play Cole.
Allowing ourself e sit back vs a Brazil or Portugal is giving the game away. We have the attacking talent to give any defence problems, we have a defence who isn't gives ourselves problems, and Cole ain't gonna change that, if you think otherwise you're deluded. Time to move forward.
Spurtle2 (U1608)
It's more if he starts the game.
But yes, if Milner starts right wing in front of you, to me it suggests the manager is concerned about how good our right back is.
I don't believe Capello played Milner there because he thought is was our best attacking option.
BusbyBabes
I thought Welbeck was better than Sturridge last night, and for all his poorness in front of goal he worked hard in other areas. But I think you're naive if you won't accept that other players can't come in and do what he does and better.
OP = clueless fkin dunce.

I think I have more of a clue than you.
The modern full backs that you mention; firstly, having the ball is rather important.
Secondly, is Cole clueless going forward? I think not.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
You haven't got a clue Winston full stop.Cole is not in the same class as Baines is going forward and even in his prime he was nowhere near as good as Baines is now.
With this Baines can't do anything if England don't have the ball are you suggesting England should approach games like they did at Euro 2012 against France and Italy etc.Hodgson himself in an interview after the game said the England team and there approach to games have improved greatly since then.
One thing I can say that you can't deny,England with Baines at leftback won the 2 games they needed to.You can't say they would have with Cole playing with the same confidence
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If Winston was in charge of England he'd want to I show passion and grit and play '44 fecking 2'.
BusbysBabes (U9083)
I'm deluded why - because you disagree? Grow up.
I think it's rather naive to believe that by attacking teams like Portugal and Brazil, we reduce their attacking threat.
I also think that chopping and changing your back four in the middle of a tournament is a mistake.
Finally, I think if we do draw Brazil or Portugal, Hodgson will look to contain them, rather than take your approach.
'44 fecking 2'.

England don't have a player who has Welbs physique for starters. If we did, you'd have a good point, but Lemalla? Feck me, he'd be like a deer in headlights.

I suggest you grow up and learn to accept other people's opinions, because at the moment you are coming across like a complete muppet.
Mike 'winston' Bassett don't you mean
I think Milner has tended to start due to an over-conservative approach to the game from managers, when we've had better attacking wingers to choose from. Milner being selected from the start for me is always the wrong choice.

All I ask is we at least try other options like Agbonlahor or Lallana. Hell if Milner is allowed to play then these guys should.

I'm deluded why - because you disagree? Grow up.
Because you're suggesting the way for England to move forward is with a 32 year old full back who offers nothing on the ball.
I think it's rather naive to believe that by attacking teams like Portugal and Brazil, we reduce their attacking threat.
So you think we'd have more chance sitting back? We'd still have 3 other defenders and two sitting midfielders. 442 and we'd get beat, like we always have.
I also think that chopping and changing your back four in the middle of a tournament is a mistake.
Then you play your best players, and everybody on here (yourself aside) agrees Baines has been the better footballer for a good period of time now
Finally, I think if we do draw Brazil or Portugal, Hodgson will look to contain them, rather than take your approach.
And that's why we won't get anywhere. Our attacking 4 yesterday would cause any defence problems.

'nothing on the ball'
Do you think that's a sensible comment?
Did I say sit back?
It does amuse me, you think we'll get somewhere if we 'go for it' against Spain and Brazil.

Certainly they should be given a go, as should Barkley and Ox, that is what the friendlies are for

If the manager needs Milner to sit in front of the full back from the start then the manager has selected the wrong full back. It's as simple as that.

Explain, tactically, what do we do down the left with Cole at left back? Why do you think sitting back is he way forward for England? It's not worked for 40 years.
OP - as a Chelsea fan and regular Cole watcher I feel like I should add that he is fine as part of a defensive unit but not a special player any more, he can be destroyed with pace and adds NOTHING going forward.

I've thought Barkley should have been played instead of Lampard these last couple of games. Ox is given a go to be fair, he's just injured at the moment.
