Messi has had more sub appearances and a good number of his appearances were made on dubious, sub-par fitness. And he had a dodgy pre-season. A fit Messi simply doesn't go 4/5 games without scoring. I still don't get the calendar stats stuff. In the past, when the likes of Henry, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Shevchenko etc are up for the award, all I see are comparisons of seasons and international tournaments- not calendar years. Messi's individual stats were vastly superior last season and culminated in the league title. Ronaldo won nothing and his individual stats were well inferior. Ronaldo does have a fantastic claim with his form this season but not nearly as clear cut as many believe.

And I don't get why Ribery is being denigrated. Because he doesn't score as much? If you keep examining performances on scoring stats, not even Zidane would have had a sniff of this award with Messi and Ronaldo around.

Yes but during the time zidane was around nobody in world football scored anywhere near the scoring records both messi and ronaldo get year in year out.
The difference is messi and ronaldo are worlds ahead of EVERY other player in World football therefore generally it is going to be between them 2.

Imagine if Messi wont score another goal this year and Ronaldo would score another 20. then in 2014 ronaldo has a lean patch but messy score for fun. Ronaldo ends the season with much better stats than messi but messi ends the year with much better stats than ronaldo.
