Jones Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal were all after him as well as Smalling.

United have had the finance and they have spent well when the right player comes along.
Fergie is more to blame then the Glazers for United's poor showing this season out.
How much was Nani and Anderson??? Owen Hargreave???

United have always been competitive in the transfer window, but recently it's been the stubbornness of Fergie that has let your club down.

Berbatov for 35 Million in a recession year. Wow big money move that.

I'm not sure Maradona would make it. He's arguably the greatest ever but will always be remembered for what he did at Napoli and the world cup rather than his time at Barca.

I'd imagine there are probably a few players that have played for Barca in the last ten years alone that would be considered better player for Barca - Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol and Messi notably.

they are. They never played together though

if you want to delve in history then we had charlton Law and best at one time. Only paid for one of them. (a world record)

Valencia, Young, Phil Jones who all the big boys were after.
----

Eh which of the big boys were after any of these lot?

Liverpool were interested in jones that's it.

The other two were cheap alternators to top quality.

A lot more money has needed to e spent and it hasn't which is why we are where we r

Jones - Liverpool were after him when we were

Valencia - Real Madrid were after him

yeah it can imagine that's exactly wanted so he could give Ronaldo some stuff conpetition. That's so ridiculous it's hilarious.

Stretty, I'm not so sure what you actually said there, but I think you're find the Real Madrid wanting Valencia thing hilarious because you feel it's not true?

Darren

Wouldn't make it in the top 5 of all time????Or do you mean at Barca? (that I agree)

RBW

I don't get your point?

Also Maradona may not have had a great time at Barca but he was still a world record signing at the time.

the point is that united historically are as big as club as Barca. We have both won our domestic leagues about the same amount and both have had world class players playing for us

Yeah sorry I meant for Barca.

Funny really, people have a go at Madrid for their Galactico transfer policy and laud Barca for their youth system, yet Barca have been doing what Madrid do for years.

I would imagine that Valencia was only a Madrid target, should they not have got Ronaldo. Only logical situation really.

Yeah kinda what I was getting at about Barca's transfer policy.

Real Madrid have been in the market for wide men, and were linked with moves for Aaron Lennon and Jermaine Pennant before the latter joined Portsmouth on loan.

The Spanish club have, however, signed Frenchman Julien Faubert from West Ham on loan until the end of the season for a fee of £1.5m.

Look Madrid were clearly going through a break up with an ex at the time and clearly trying to sign all sorts of garbage players.

And that was in January so he hardly turned them down to move to us as it was 6 months later

I know that we are not poor, but our general trend of buying players has been to go for younger talent and bring them on. Yes, we paid record fees going as far back as Robson, I then think Cole and probably Ferdinand after that, but that was some considerable time ago. The likes of Rooney, even Carrick cost fairly hefty money but it was more our pull as a club rather than ferociously outbidding other teams. And in recent times we have paid fees for players between £15 - £25 million, but not for mega-star players, and relatively speaking a lot of teams can pay out such fees.

Looking at the foreign market, in recent times we have not gone for the mega bid, or not successfully anyway.

Part of this might be when we bought Veron, which simply didn't work out, but the amount spent on RVN wasn't a ridiculous amount, or a world record fee. Our biggest recent fees for foreign players were for proven talent in the EPL, in Berbatov and RVP, and it's debatable how good the Berbatov signing was.

It will be interesting to see who we bid for, assuming in the CM positions, this summer (assuming they're not available in January). Will it be an attempt for a Fabregas type signing (which will cost around £40 million mark), or a couple of lesser known signings?

Loads? From who?

I still can't beleive we signed him after selling the worlds best player. Beggars belief.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Number of reasons.

At his best he was average.

We needed good players to help us improve, part of the reason we are where we are now.

Just generally a poor signing. Typical of fergies last few years. He bottled buying good players apart from rvp.

We should have been in for the likes of Modric, Martinez, etc.

posted on 4/1/14

I thought he was a good signing at the time, especially the period before his injury, granted he seems to have regressed over the last couple of seasons but he wasn't always this bad.

We were never going to replace Ronaldo.
