With all due respect, with the talent we have amongst our squad we should not be playing with 5 at the back and also struggling against sides like Denmark and Poland in recent memory.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

We shouldn't lose at home to Fulham and Burnley. It happens. Soutgate is no Klopp or Pep, but he took on a team on its knees, identified strengths and hid the weaknesses to get us to a world cup semi final. He has looked to move the team forward and can now play 3 formations, which we haven't had since Hoddle was in charge.
I agree that with the players we now have, we should be looking better and more fluid but lets see how we go when the actual tournament starts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But there comes a point where you can only take your team so far and I think over the past 12 months or so it seems as if that's the case with Southgate.

It's ok saying he has taken England to a World Cup semi final, of course that's a fine achievement, but when you look into that, did he actually do anything spectacular? No, not really. He didn't beat anybody that we weren't expected to beat, we actually did as was expected. You could even argue he potentially got the England job at the best possible time as he couldn't have done any worse than Hodgson, so the pressure was very much off. But the expectation is there now after the World Cup. I will give him this tournament to see if he can meet or surpass what we all would expect England to do, but if not, it's time for him to go.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This whole "he had an easy run" doesn't cut it for me. How many other times have we lost or drawn games in major tournaments that have cost us. In tournament football, all that matters is getting it done, which we have been awful at, and Southgate did.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not suggesting that he didn't. For doing that, well done, he has done better than many in recent times as well and that alongside the positivity around the England squad are the two major highlights from his time in charge of England imo.

However, looking forward and looking at some of the talent we have now, he needs to utilise it. It doesn't exactly show us much encouragement when we are potentially leaving out the countries best attacking right back for two full backs, being Walker and Trippier, that are commonly known to be average at the top level for both club and country.

So many of our players are now at the top level of football and have been for the past couple of seasons and in the majority of cases, the one's that aren't at usually performing above where their club actually are anyway, when you think about Grealish for example. If Southgate can't get the best out of this talent, then questions must be asked.

Trent would be perfect In a back 5, especially against minnows.

But Southgate is a clown and doesn't play good football, so I'm not surprised, completely and utterly disillusioned with the England team these days
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't get why though. This England team is far more in touch than anything we had from 2006 onwards. Soutgate has had one international tournament and took us to the semi finals and then followed up by topping a nations league group with Croatia and Spain in. The players are more likeable. the manager is certainly more likeable and has obviously created a strong team spirit which we hadn't had in 15 plus years. I really don't get how anyone can be too down on England at the moment to be honest.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably because they have an old style manager who plays old style defensive football, hence why not taking TAA is even a discussion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What makes him an old style manager?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The defensive football and old style thinking in his tactics and team selections, even with an abundance of top attacking players. Granted England wouldn't have went so far in the last tournament without this system but there has been plenty of time to develop a core group of mostly young players into a more attacking system. Not selecting TAA in the squad, nevermind the first team is a prime example of this not happening.

If Southgate can't get the best out of this talent, then questions must be asked.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

But he fully deserves a chance to show what he can do with the players at his disposal now. It isn't like we've been scraping around struggling to score under him. He may not be the one who will get the best out of the team, but the whole squad clearly enjoys playing under him and generally plays with a smile on their faces. People talk about him playing 3 at the back and two holding players against teams he shouldn't, ignoring that the amount of time to work on these things is so limited as an international coach, he has to do it when he can. We need to play that way against certain teams, and we have to practice playing that way.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He's had plenty of time to display how good we are, and under Southgate we aren't. Losing 1-0 to Denmark? Struggling past Poland? That's about our level, back where we used to be. Yes, it's better than what it was before, but that's not saying much. Back to being able to just be able to scrape past your half decent national sides with the occasional poor result (Denmark) and then struggling against any good international side, with the occasional good result.

Nobody is disputing the time it takes preparing a team because we all know he doesn't have that long, but that's not the point he isn't preparing the team in the correct way. Playing a back 3/5 with 2 holding midfielders is poor with the attacking talent we have, we need to go and play with our attacking players because at the moment, it wouldn't be a ridiculous statement to say our potential attacking talent rivals or betters the top nations.

That's a shame I think, for a 20 year old considering what he walked into I think he did very well after a shakey first couple of games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We made the decision on Konate and with Matip not leaving we just can't make it feasible to purchase him. A smart move would have been to buy him and then loan him but we don't operate like that.

He will get a decent move whether its Liepzig or someone like Leicester. 18m is still a bargain.

Saying that, imagine the scenes when Konate breaks on his first appearance

Think that's a poor decision tbh. Same age as Williams but a far better player. We need depth at centre back as Gomez, Matip and Konate if we sign him all have poor injury records and VVD won't be consistently available this year.

Apparently Klopp is the one pushing for Konate.

Either way £30m for Konate, who's injury record is on the same level as Gomez & Matip, or Kabak who can play more than 6 consecutive games do a decent level for £18m and already has exposure to the PL.

I know which one makes more sense and less risk.

Konate better have Van Dijk level of impact to be honest.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

If it means we have 20 odd million more to put towards a position that we need a first choice player for, then it is the right decision. Can we really justify paying 20 million for someone who would only play in the CC if everyone stays fit?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well he's 21, so if he stays until he's 26 it's 4m a year (less because the asking price is actually 18m).

It's got a lot of upside as a transfer. Especially when VVD is coming off a horrendous injury and Matip is never available.

posted on 25/5/21

There were plenty on this thread supporting Klopp and the whatever the committee call themselves these days when they were advocating rolling the dice on Matip staying fit in January and it backfired massively.
