In his interview with The Athletic [subscription required]
, the 33-year-old, who had been a champion of LGBTQ+ rights before moving to the country, which criminalises homosexuality, explained how the move came about.
"There were a few things that sent alarm bells ringing," said Henderson. "I’ve got a very good relationship with [Liverpool manager] Jurgen [Klopp]. He was very honest with me. I won’t go into detail about the conversation because it’s private, but it put me in a position where I knew that I wasn’t going to be playing as much. I knew there were going to be new players coming in my position.
"And if I’m not playing, as anybody will know, especially the manager, that can be quite difficult for me and especially when I’ve been at a club for so long, I’ve captained the team for so long. Especially when England’s a big thing for me.
"You’ve got the Euros coming up. And then there was an approach from Al-Ettifaq to the club to see if it would be possible for me to go there. The reaction from the club again wasn’t to say no.
"At that moment I felt as though my value or the want for me to stay, with the manager and within the club, maybe it had shifted. I knew that time would come at some point. I didn’t think it would be now. And I had to accept that."
________
Seems reasonable tbh.
It's absolutely fine really isn't it.

Absolutely. He took everything into account and made the correct decision for himself.
Just heard ETH referred to as Erik Ty Hag after the Arsenal game
Wish Henderson would just shut the Fack up.
Constantly trying to justify his Saudi move.
We know why you did it ffs, just get on with your footy.

I don't think he's constantly doing it, but you're right.
The 700k pw obviously had nothing to do with eh Jordan
I don't get the issue with Henderson. From the quote it sounds like a very sensible conversation took place and he was told his game time would reduce and he'd become a squad player with others coming in.
That's not the same as wanting him out, I'm sure the clubs were happy to keep him as a squad player, but he's admitting he'd find that difficult so when the offer came in and Liverpool didn't reject it, he went for it.
I just don't understand the tarnishing legacy crap. He was with us for 12 years, took on the difficult job of replacing Gerrard as captain and was an important part of a EPL and CL winning team. Then he got old, was going to be a squad player so decided to cash in. Fair enough.
Reading his quotes, it sounds like the criticisms from LGBTQ+ community have stung him.
I know footballers aren't always the brightest but that backlash was entirely predictable. I can't believe he didn't factor it in. Before deciding, nah feck-it I'll just take the £700k a week.
Paddy Power’s Facebook nailed it this morning
Not sure what all the fuss is about tbh
I think his arrogance in this move has been pretty poor tbh. As others have said, moving to a country for £700k a week where they can still issue the death penalty for homosexuality and regularly behead their citizens in public with a sword and then claiming woe is me really is a little special.
Nothing stopping him going to Sunderland, Bournemouth, Brighton etc and getting regularly game time if he felt that not playing was the issue.
For the record I think Henderson is a true Liverpool great and has done fantastic work in the community but wish he’d just admit he got this wrong and not double down on it.
He's a footballer...they're all thick as shiiit
While I always thought Hendo seemed above average intelligence for a footballer, this makes me think again.
No issues with his comments about not feeling wanted at LFC, the headline there is running away from what he actually said. But yeah, not anticipating the backlash from the LGBTQ community was a bit dim...
Even the leaving comments are reetaarded af
You get told your playing time will be reduced. A club comes in with an offer. You agree personal terms then cry because no one made you feel wanted
“I’ve done it all, I’ve worn the laces, I’ve worn the armband”
It’s almost as if these virtue signalling things are quite pointless in the fight that LGBT people face…

Disagree, even now some of us in here still call Chelsea fans 'rentboys'. I doubt it seems virtue signally to people who actually are LGBTQ
I haven't seen rentboys in ages tbh
