Trump’s legal troubles will lead many to question his suitability as president. Nikki Haley is even making the primaries look mildly competitive in some states (if you believe polls), she’ll lose but the battle will probably hurt Trump because he’ll have to speak.
Ultimately the US is even more polarised than the UK. There are a % who would never ever vote democrat so will vote for whoever the republicans put up. As the same in reverse. The middle ground floating voters are who count, will those largely centralist voters go for Trump in enough numbers? If the economy is doing ok/well and trump is still facing a multitude of legal cases? I have my doubts. But the democrats would do well to have a quiet word with Biden and get him to step aside imo. A younger, more switched on democrat woils make Trump look like the old man at the party.

Democrats having no choice but Biden is the only thing that gives Trump a chance. Still says a lot about Trump and what people think of him that he can't beat fecking Biden in an election.

It’s not competitively paid (relative to what the best minds could earn elsewhere) and the environment is a cesspool. Difficult to see how that changes.

I don’t think it’s anything to do with pay tbh. Idealistically it’s the sort of job ‘the right person’ wouldn’t be doing for the money, more about making a positive contribution. The real issue imo is that it’s impossible for the right type of person to actually get anywhere in politics. Unless you’re of use to people of influence then you’ll get no support. Integrity is the last thing that the powerful are looking for in a leader.

Well you’re not wrong, I work close enough to government to have witnessed the self-centred and often outright stupidity of ministers.
But you’re looking at it from the perspective of one good person making it in the current environment. That simply wouldn’t happen. You need to make the job attractive the brightest and best, not just the idealistic (not that being idealist is always bad) and power-hungry. It needs to be a systemic change, a flood of people who would change the game rather than try to play it.
It’s what makes it so fundamentally unlikely. Or even impossible. But if you were going to try then making it financially lucrative and switching to proportional representation would be a reasonable place to start.
They are both definitely way too old. Not being ageist but world leaders should be no more than 60. How can an 80 odd year old possibly connect with 20-30 somethings?
Enough of this political shiiiit I say,

If you look at the squad I started with, I think my trades have made it worse. Significantly worse actually. Albeit largely forced through injury.

Sounds like Carvalho is being recalled and then re-loaned in January. Not getting games for RBL and they've just signed a player in his position on a permanent deal.
Nat's loan to Celtic also is up (was only 6 months) and there's also talk we'll recall Owen Beck from Dundee as cover for left back. He's had a good season up in Scotland so far, starting nearly every game, but it'd be a big gamble to throw him in to a PL game.
