Who'd have thunk it eh? That's both Bobby and Hendo rumoured to be unhappy in Saudi. Turns out playing in front of 500 fans a week in 45 degrees isn't worth the extra cash.

Gerrard is also flopping hard as a manager out there. Crazy to think there was talk of him being Klopp's successor.

Tbf is probubbly just as miserabubble for coaches out there as it is for players

It was the fairytale that got people saying. I always said he should've stayed at Rangers after the unbeaten season to see how far he go trying to replicate it plus also get valuable experience in Europa

Even Benzema wants out. Most players have seen this as a quick earner and then back to Europe.

They probably don't give much of a fack. Just taking the money.

And then you’ve got Messi apparently having a lovely old time in Miami, helped by a Barca old boy network, all because he was prepared to take a bit less cash. Feck ‘em. They were prepared to be bent over for cash, don’t complain if it’s a bit unpleasant.

How were they bent over exactly? Looks to me like they made a killing out there. Not everyone has a network of old boys you know.

I think he’s saying that Messi made choices that gives him the best of everything, he didn’t go just because of the money. He’ll still be earning plenty of money, but he’ll also have a great lifestyle and be playing in front of full stadiums every week. Those in Saudi have gone purely for the money, which is absolutely fine, but they seem to be realising one by one that maybe there should be more to it than that. Empty stadiums, restricted lifestyle, playing with and against far inferior players (name me one Saudi player without looking it up).

I’d be a little surprised if players are still flocking to Saudi in the next few windows.

And my point is not everyone is the best in the world like Messi and not everyone had an opportunity to do what Messi did. Comparing yourself to Messi will leave you broke and penniless. He also has sponsorships and endorsements that will make him a fortune in USA than the middle east. Others don't have those to the same level as Messi and the wage paid by the Saudi's makes up some of the difference. Have to do what's best for you and your situation. I'm sure many would have chosen the Messi route if it was available and as lucrative as it was for Messi.

The assumption that Messi chose less money may not be accurate. Going to MLS could just as easily be as lucrative or more lucrative as going to Saudi.

Exactly 👍

All the big name players would have had a range of options available to them, they chose the best paid but with significant sporting and personal compromises. Complaining about those compromises and wanting out within 6 months is a bit pathetic imo.

You can dress it up all you like, but it comes down to greed either way. Let’s not kid ourselves that any of the players who went to Saudi were poorly paid at their previous clubs. They were already guaranteed to retire as multi millionaires, so although I’m not going to criticise them for going, they should have known what they were letting themselves in for and not naively think they were going to some kind of footballing paradise.

Like Naby says, wanted to pack it in after six months is pretty pathetic, and just highlights how entitled and pampered they are.

Can someone explain to me professional footballers earnimg, minimum, tens of thousands per week for 10/15/20 years then needing to move to Saudi for the money?

By their mid thirties they've earned 10"s of millions over their career. £100,000pw is £5.2m pa, that's at the modest end of the wage scale.

Of course he is. Whereas he was a spent force in European football, he’s now able to massage his ego by banging in loads of goals in the Saudi Conference.

He wasn't a spent force. He was United's top scorer. If you wanna talk about failure then look no further than Messi in French football.

In fact, the season he left United he’d scored one goal in ten games.

Depends for me. Quality of life is far more important for me. If it meant living in a restrictive country like Saudi I'd give it a swerve.

I’m not so sure. If you already had enough money to set your family up for a couple of generations then why would you go somewhere that restricts your quality of life? I’m not sure I’d be going under those circumstances, but then I’m speaking from the experience of knowing first hand what it’s like being in those countries.
