I think I could somewhat handle Trent joining Madrid but leaving on a free would be shocking to be honest.

I know he didn't cost us anything but he's arguably a £100m player and we'll need that money if he wants out.

We've not been that bad losing players for nothing have we?

Emre Can prob being the worse or Wijnaldum? I think we kinda took a risk on Moreno and Clyne who had interest and even offered 10m for Moreno but held out for 12 or sumin? both stayed and left for free, Clyne playing pre season and getting a bad injury in it.

Think we should be more wary of players running contracts down more often now and maybe act sooner? like Diaz now for example, low wage, 2 years left end of this season.

Theres been a lot more but i dont think we were that bothered about Keita or Ox or Sturridge, Markovic etc? And kinda accepted it was time for Bobby and Milner, Lallana etc.

Clubs don't just offer players contracts. They are long drawn out negotiations, which can be made longer if there is not an early agreement but negotiation on certain things.

His comments suggested he has always dreamed of captaining Liverpool and it's still a target of his. You could take that two ways in my opinion. He wants to stay and one day be captain or he wants assurances now that he will be captain before signing.

I can say that because we have zero idea what the circumstances are behind us not physically offering a contract. One thing we can dismiss is that the club don’t want him to stay and are happy for him to leave for nothing. So what are the possibilities for what has happened. Off the top of my head……

1. The upheaval at the club meant that there was actually no one to oversee contract renewals, which would also explain the lack of activity with other players. You can argue that’s a poor state to be in and probably have a point, but once it was announced that Klopp was leaving, it was then virtually impossible to even think about contract renewals until the new set up was in place.

2. Trent has intimated to the club his intention to join RM. As already stated, there’s not much we can do if he’s done this. We certainly won’t be able to get him to change his mind with financial incentives, we won’t be able to match what RM can give him. We would just have to hope that with a full year to think about it he decides he can’t go through with it. The club or Trent are unlikely to announce this yet as the implications will be too much of a distraction.

3. No one has made any decisions and negotiations are going on behind the scenes, now that we actually have someone at the club responsible for this.

i think the point is trents contract should have been extended years ago to push him into his 30s with us. and if we cant agree on that, need to get a decent fee for him.

Virgil and Salah are different for obvious reasons. I dont think the clubs done much wrong with their contract situation. Obv still hope they offer them a good contract to keep them another 2/3 years but if not hey we've had them in their primes and theyll be leaving aged 33 or 34, not 26..

I'd rather we keep negotiating with a player like Trent than sell him unless he agrees to the initial negotiations. I'm sure the club know that he will sign and both sides are trying to get the best deal. Obviously the longer it goes on the more it is in the players favour and therefore they normally get what they want.

Only one I can think of who didn't was Wijnaldum. The club held firm on that one but I think that's a different case than the Trent situation whereby he's vice captain, could be at the club years and is a world class talent.

Sell to who? You’ve completely overlooked the Madrid aspect. I doubt Trent would leave for anyone other than Madrid, and if they’ve been in his ear, like they do with most of their signings, then he could have had this in mind for 18 months, easily.

3 years ago we have bargaining power, and if a player refuses to extend and says he will only join a club not willing to pay a fee and will just wait until his contract is up. Then we are well within our right to focus efforts elsewhere and let said player rot for 3 years in the u18s. Regardless of who or what ttheyve done for us, the club always comes first.

Alternattively you compromise and say well ull be 26 come the end anyway, sign an extension, a low real madrid clause when you're 27. Somethings better than nothing.

Ofc Trent could well resign with us, given assurances ages ago. But if not we will look amateurish if we lose a 26 yr old trent to RM for nothing. And it will hurt, even we do wish him all the best and hold no grudges with him.

The club have utterly failed when it comes to contract renewals. Salah and VVD too.

Bit early to be saying that. Need to separate the Trent situation from Salah/VVD one, completely different circumstances.

If all three leave then you’ll have a point, but I’d be amazed if that happens. Even if Trent leaves, I firmly believe that it’ll be because it was his choice to do so.

Everyone will be and rightly so. But it’s the way things are going and have been for some time. Gone are the days when the clubs hold all the power, even read someone yesterday saying that Trent should rot in the reserves if he’d decided to leave Same person also thinks we should have sold him if he’d signalled his intention to leave, but I believe if you have a world class player you should keep him as long as possible, as there aren’t many of them around. Too many concentrate purely on the economics of a player, I’m more interested in them as footballers, what they do for the club whilst they’re here.

Football is a multi-billion pound business. It's difficult to ignore the financial aspect of the game...especially as a fan and especially as one that buys into the sport or club.

We managed to get Suarez & Coutinho, in recent memory, to sign new contracts just before we sold them. I would assume the club is trying the same with Trent.

Have they? The have resigned excellent players to new contracts without them going to Madrid or Barca. It's been a long time since the club have been able to do that.

Which players out of interest did they fail with? I can only think of Can and Wijnaldum who chose not to sign but then that's hardly a failure since it was their decision. Who you got?

Will just be the same to me if he left for £100m. The club are loaded and can absorb £100m. My issue would simply be him leaving and finding a replacement.
