vvd dropping 50 yards deeper than his entire def vs chris facking wood?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He didn't drop deeper. He was in the correct position as everybody risked bombing forward thinking a counter was on only for Salah to lose the ball. One pass took out the whole midfield and defence apart from VVD who was left scrambling to get to Wood who had pulled out to our vacant right side.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When our right CB goes over to the right flank so that our right back can play in the middle, VVD has to move further towards the right as does Robertson so basically there's gaping holes on both flanks.
But inverting is the in thing right now, and it's what Pep and all the other big teams are doing so we should do it too.

i dont think vvd did much wrong until he got caught in no mans land not stepping out once the ball in behind to wood wasnt played. he stayed deep when he should have played for offside and stepped up towards elanga. he ended up in nomans land not close enough to wood not close enough to elanga.

Inverting wasn't the issue with the goal. In general it's a trade off anyhow as your leaving three players back instead of four and getting an extra man into midfield. It works in our favour more than not.
However the balance of when to take the risks has to be right when you're playing a controlled possession game. Players shouldn't be bombing forward in the first half at 0-0 when there's a risk of the ball being turned over.

I suppose you are right that it's a trade off but I'm not sure we wouldn't be better off just not inverting. I theorise that by not inverting, perhaps we eliminate our biggest weakness but still retain most, if not all, of our attacking impetus because TAA impacts the game just as well from the right side and
We've conceded quite a few goals the last month or two and if you look back you can see where our biggest defensive weakness lies and if we can see it then rival teams and managers can too.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The reason the best teams invert as they face teams sitting in against them almost every week so have no need for four defenders passing it around the back, they need more players further up the pitch to break them down. Look what Slot had to do against Forest, not only Trent inverting second half as they sat back but he took off a centre back also. Some teams are excellent at sitting in and we'll drilled. Playing a traditional system is what they are used to and doesn't throw up many unexpected situations for them. You need to get more players in there.
posted 3 hours, 11 minutes ago
Also much of our defensive issues have been injuries. We've had Konate out, Gomez covering then also put out, Trent had some time out, Bradley and Tsimikas also. Before all this and with a settled defence they were solid.
Also you can't win every game, there's an opposition too, who have players who are doing their thing also. Every goal isn't the fault of somebody. We praise our players for scoring goals with no mention that they scored because of the fault of an opposition player but then blame our own defenders for conceding a goal with no mention of the attackers of the opposition just scoring a good goal. It's strange.

We were chasing the game and Forest sitting on their one goal lead, so it's not rare for a manager to do those changes.
Also, we will not be in a similar situation as we were against Forest majority of the time so it doesn't mean it's the right way to set up from the off.

Fair point. We didn't concede a lot when everyone was fit, but on the other hand, it's a long running problem which we are no strangers to.
Inverting when in possession seems to be our default approach, but I'd rather we use it sparingly and opportunistically, if at all.
posted 2 hours, 57 minutes ago
But we didn't set up that way from the off. There was a complete change in Trent's position second half. In fact from the kick off he was already standing in midfield near the centre circle.
However if you remember the way we were playing before they scored had us camped in their half creating chances, with the overwhelming majority of the possession. The goal changed the game as it always does, meaning they dropped further back and doubled up on the wide players, which causes the centre backs to be free and trying to be the playmakers, which you obviously don't want. Therefore a change needs to be made to change that narrative, which Slot saw and did.

And Fred don't think I didn't see you on the match thread relentlessly crying out for a centre back to come on when we were barely facing any attacks and needed a goal, having seen them not pressing the centre backs previously but dropping off into position, making them the playmakers and playing into their hands.

Unfortunately I’m starting to think similar (hope I’m wrong)
I’ve believed for a while Trent is gone but losing Mo as well will make the summer business a lot more difficult
Still could be worse. Top of league and CL I mean we could be united.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We will have to spend huge in the summer and risk stepping backwards whilst our rivals will be looking to strengthen.

Has to happen at some point.

Can't blame him really considering he's one of the best in the world and on £30k per week. Also the structured system under Conte doesn't suit his style of play. I'd imagine that was a big part of why their top players have been trying to, some successfully, to leave.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I suppose you are right that it's a trade off but I'm not sure we wouldn't be better off just not inverting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We were chasing the game and Forest sitting on their one goal lead, so it's not rare for a manager to do those changes.
Also, we will not be in a similar situation as we were against Forest majority of the time so it doesn't mean it's the right way to set up from the off.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fair point. We didn't concede a lot when everyone was fit, but on the other hand, it's a long running problem which we are no strangers to.
Inverting when in possession seems to be our default approach, but I'd rather we use it sparingly and opportunistically, if at all.

It’s not really strange, just part and parcel of being a football fan.

No it isn't. Some football fans understand the game.

And Fred don't think I didn't see you on the match thread relentlessly crying out for a centre back to come on when we were barely facing any attacks and needed a goal, having seen them not pressing the centre backs previously but dropping off into position, making them the playmakers and playing into their hands.

Someone mentioned earlier it’s looking like only possible VVD may sign.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Has to happen at some point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, but it gives us more time for transistion!

Chode is an insult in English too! Funny little misunderstanding there actually, two different meanings even if they're both insults

Can't blame him really considering he's one of the best in the world and on £30k per week. Also the structured system under Conte doesn't suit his style of play. I'd imagine that was a big part of why their top players have been trying to, some successfully, to leave.

Definitely PSG then I guess? Personally, I always doubt a player’s playing ambition when they go there.
