Of course we would.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm glad you agree, but some people may not. Just wondered if people thought same as me
I would have no problem with that at all. In fact, I'd feel no shame if we won the WC based on stodgy defence while universally alienating the watching fans, a la Greece at Euro 2004.
People who don't agree are lying.
Nobody is going to be upset if we won the World Cup by being lucky.
I wouldn't care if all the other teams were disqualified for some reason and we won it by default.
In reality, I think you need a combination of being pretty good when it matters AND lucky to go all the way.
E.g. England in 1990 had a mixture of playing not that well but getting lucky (Cameroon) and playing well (Netherlands) before their luck ran out while playing well (Germany).
I wouldn't care if all the other teams were disqualified for some reason and we won it by default.
---------------------------
I reckon under those circumstances the triumph might feel a bit hollow.
I wouldn't mind, but I would draw the line at a 'Maradonna' or 'Suarez' - blatant cheating would feel more hollow than being given the trophy by default
I hope Suarez dives, wins a pen and England go out, that would be hilarious Imagine the press reaction!
But I actually hope England do well so can't have both I guess.
As for OP, who would really care, honest question, if Rooney did what Suarez did to Ghana would you all have cared that much? england would have been into a semi final in the same scenario?
Like when Henry handled the ball v ROI in that qualifier. Yes it was shít at the time (the OTT reaction in Ireland was hilarious, one píssed fella went into a supermarket and started píssing on the cusine de France bread stand shouthing "fúcking cheating bástards, honestly this happened)
But on reflection if Robbie Keane had did the same thing and we'd gone to the WC instead I'd have been delighted.

We'd still somehow manage to lose on penalties.

Greece will win it.
In answer to the OP, ask the Germans.
I may have my rose tinted glasses on but I genuinely think that if we can get through the group stages then we can go all the way, providing of course that we avoid Germany & Argentina.
I'm one of the few United fans that doesn't hold that handball against Suarez.
The reason for that is because he was punished for it. And I think anybody would have done the same thing in those circumstances - it was a visceral reaction.
And bare in mind than Gyan then missed the pen. And they were also given another lifeline in the shoutout which they lost.
Suarez is a caaant. But I cannot hold that one against him.
I don't think the handball was an exceptional piece of villainy. It's no different to hacking someone down when they are going through on goal. Both are visible fouls which are inevitably going to be punished with a red card (unless it is United away at the Bernabeu).
Lets hope we get some good ones in our favour then
England are shît at shout outs, too?

If you look a the possible games, we could get a fairly easy game in first knock out but then we'd get Brazil or Spain.
Some England fans would probably rather see Jagielka trying a stunning diving header clearance & gloriously failing than 'cheating' & giving his side a chance.
Suarez gambled, in that situation I'd like to think I would & it paid off.
He met his rightful punishment, the penalty was simply horrendous.

And these controversial moments are what makes world cups so exciting. When they happen to your own team it's a kick in the teeth, of course, but as a spectacle it adds to the excitement.
Nobody remembers Adebayor's handball against us in the league a few years ago. Everyone remembers Maradona's and Suarez's.
Why should he show remorse and not celebrate? He missed and it kept his team in the World Cup. Of course he was going to celebrate, emotions were running high and that one kick was the difference between his country going out and them having a chance of staying in the tournament.
at least have the humility and show remorse, don't celebrate like mad when he misses the kick.
--------------------------------------
I understand that way of looking at it but the other side of it is that he was at least honest.
I found Henry's conduct against Ireland in some ways more despicable. His cheating won the game for France but having effectively taken that moral decision, he acted crestfallen at the consequences. He wanted to cheat but didn't want to be perceived as a cheat. He wanted it both ways. I didn't like that.
sure, why not
starfish stevie flops with no contact against argentina. he then misses the penalty but the evil Jordan henderson puts in the rebound with a kung fu style punch followed by a Bruce Lee 'flex' with a loud "hawaaaaaaaaaaah"
works for me.
