world cup is numbers, and numbers never end, if it takes world cups to be happy your search for happiness will never end

!986 and 1990 were good.

1994, 1998 were lost to a blur of drink and drugs, although strangely Euro 96 still stands out for me as the best tournie ever. "Its coming home" and all that.

One friend of mine (who didn't even like football) decided to jump on a plane and go to Paris as soon as they won it, partied all weekend and then came home. Told me after he got back, but I would have gone if hed told me before he went.

1998 for me. The first World Cup I properly remember.

Loved every minute.

'98 for me. Was only six at the time but still have really good memories of it, it's what got me into Football and is just about my earliest Football memory. Remember having a big poster up on the wall and being all excited to fill out the scores.

Also World Cup '98 was the first Football game I played on PS1.

As I said, depends what you want from a tournament.

The idea that I would enjoy 1994 when England weren't there, more than I would 1990 is a bit silly to me, but each to their own.

Obviously if we were discussing the best quality football then it'd be different, but we're not.

The OP asked which was my favourite.

Winston,

England's run was memorable & equally painful in it's ending, from that perspective I can understand why Italia 90 is held in high regard, especially over here, seeing as we haven't had a semi-final appearance since.

However, on the whole it was a relief when it finished for me. Reflected by the final were Argentina resorted to kicking lumps out of the Germans & diving to try & even the contest up.

All depends, as you say. Not amongst the best as far as I'm concerned.

Yeh, but the question was - which is your favourite?

Memory distorts things of course, but I have a lot more memories of Italia 90 than certainly 94 and 02, and in some respects 98 as well.

No he didn't - he clearly asked for your favourite.

And mine is 1990.

It's okay if we have different favourites, you know

1966 by the way for best. Not just because of winning it but I was treated to 2 of the games at Goodison for taking my "O" levels. Those strange cutaway terraces built into the ground for the world cup so fans coulnt throw things ...eee um happy days

The title is a title.

There is only one question.

Perhaps you will continue to argue this as you never admit you've made a mistake.

Good luck with that.

Lothar Matthaus was my footballing hero after watching that tournament
.....................................................................

I wasn't his biggest fan to be honest Greatteams, odd as it might sound because he was fantastic in that tournament & had a great career. He did provide one of the rare moments of true quality though against the Yugoslavs.

Brehme, now there was a player, left back equally good going going forward & defending, two footed & cool as you like. Priceless in todays game.

Was a scary team that though. Who'd have though six World Cups later they'd be waiting for another win.
