Was annoyed when ladies tennis got the same prize money as men despite only having to play 3 sets as opposed to 5.

Some of those differences are huge tbf but cant see any reason why it would be the same

Ridiculous notion woman should earn parity in (most) sport, talking specifically regarding football, they aren’t even close in terms of level, interest as a spectacle or generating money.

If you keep the disparity in terms of prize money as it is then the gap in quality/skill/attention will remain or increase.

Increasing the prize money for women's sport to try to kickstart some improvement and close the gap would be a good idea. If more money was pumped into women's sports then they might become more appealing to spectators, which would lead to more natural progression than just throwing money at it, but the money is probably the first thing to address.

Put it this way - Was the Premier League REALLY that much better in 1992/93 than the First Division was the season before?

No. But there was a heck of a lot more money invested into it, which led to artificial perception of improved quality in the first couple of seasons (mainly at Sky's insistence)

A little leap of faith in terms of the women's game might go a long way

Parity, depends where the prize money comes from.

Where will this magical money to pay millions in prizes for women come from?

posted on 28/10/14

What a clueless fool he is

The reason male footballers get paid so much is they fill tens of thousands of seats in stadiums, sell millions in shirts and even more in TV

The real issue here is getting people to watch female sports as much as male sports.

But that isn't going to happen.

Ever.

Men's sport tends to generate more revenue; the stars' respective earnings are simply supply and demand.

The idea of trying to level the playing field in, say, football earnings whilst the men's game generates billions more is fairly preposterous.

If it was commercially viable to show the women's game as often as the men's then companies would have jumped on it by now. The truth is though, it isn't.

Get the women to swap shirts at half time, and full time and the crowds will more than double. Guaranteed.

Could always just insist on underwear replacing women's football shirts?

FIFA, the organisation that won't include Suarez in the 23 players in the world because of ethical reasons but will accept £20k watches from associations without even a hint of guilt.

why would I watch womens football when I can go to the park on a sunday and watch the same quality of football

posted on 28/10/14

Its because men are better at the sports, and attract more customers = more money to pay them.

It really isn't rocket science.

It's ridiculous though - people watch men play football because they are physically better and therefore it is better to watch for the "consumer". It's nothing to do with marketing or games shown, the mens game would still generate far more money.

I didn't realise that suicide was a sport... does the money automatically get paid to the next of kin?

MonTheChels - Hit the nail on the head there.

Surely as it's stands England's Women Football players are overpaid? In comparison of the overall standard of Football most Womens games are at a level with the Ryman league.

So if the men playing at that standard earn £30 a game, surely Englands women should too?
There's an argument in there somewhere against the Men's international team as well.

Plus women can't commit to training and matches 5 days a week, as they kids need to be picked up from school, the washing and ironing needs to be done, meals need to be cooked etcetera etcetera...

Tennis and athletics are probably the only mainstream sports where women are as marketable as men, so they earn the same. For most of the other major sports though - football, rugby, America's big 4 sports, boxing, golf etc, I just don't see it ever happening.

Pride, Robben

We should just make it open season on the gender issue. If the women are good enough, they'll get signed up for top teams.

Then they can earn the money.

Maybe Spurs can sign that Brazilian striker Marta, she'd get in instead of Adebayor
