I know this is herecy to fellow United fans but Chelsea are now on the same level of United in terms of power and imo a bigger draw to big players than we are.
-----------------------------------------------
I dont think they are a bigger draw for top players. with ffp rules limiting clubs expenditure, we can easily pay more transfer fees and wages for top players than Chelsea, chelsea have the London factor going for them though.

Which club is the bigger draw is largely depends on the player clubs are after imo, generally speaking both clubs are a 'big draw' for top players. biggest in UK

As a United fan I probably would as we've won plenty of titles which is by far and away the most important thing to win year in, year out. You guys are on something poxy like 4 aren't you? You should be on more. You're joint with Wednesday and Newcastle ffs. Behind the likes of Everton, Sunderland and Villa. You def should be looking to get more title wins with the amount of money you've spent.

Can you remember us beating them for players since roman came though?

Essien, robben, ballack, hazard all chose them over us.

Why should we be above some of the teams you have named.

Apart from brief spells in the 50's and late 60's/early 70's we have always been cannon fodder for the title challengers.

Just because we have been more successful in the last 20 years cant wipe away how poor we was for a lot of the proceeding 90.

Some of the teams you mention have had very successful periods previously.

That was in fergie era, SAF refused to pay silly money for players. Things have changed. Now we are in position where we can easily pay more than what chelsea can. with FFP rules, we are a bigger draw for players who wants to play for the club that pays them more

Chelsea have done pretty much as expected for the money spent, very well but without that magic of a real football club that's built their success from the ground up. I know that sounds harsh but I'd like to think even Chelsea fans could see the difference between success that coincides with outspending everyone vs building a team through years of player development and smart on/off field work.

City have underachieved massively though IMO.

Apparently you don't understand it. Fair enough, some Chelsea fans really are that stupid...

True fans should take a long-term view IMO. Let time be the judge of Roman's regime. Their recent successes could end up the stuff of future bar quizes, if there's no long-term material investment in the club.
The fact that they're yet to leverage their global profile and Roman's largesse into a new stadium, should be of great concern to the old-timers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fair point on the stadium, but do you really think we have not leveraged our global profile.....I think there is plenty of evidence that suggests otherwise

For the amount of money Chelsea have spent since Roman took over, is it safe to say that they have failed miserably in terms of dominating on the trophy front?

---------------------

Failed on the trophy front ?? For real ??

We've won every trophy that we could have possibly won in the Roman era apart from the World Club Championship although nobody takes that too seriously.

We've won both the Champions League and Europa League in back to back years as well as getting to multiple CL semis.

Ask City after all the money they've spent how easy it is to get to a CL semi as they haven't even managed that once yet let alone winning it.

The only area we've underachieved is the Premiership as we should have done better than three titles. Then again there are reasons for that, ie our constant changing of managers, Fergie's stranglehold on the Premiership as well as City's emergence.

If we stick with Jose we should at least win another title or two in the coming years.

It's not all that bad. Looks like one or two people at Chelsea are actively concerned about life after Abramovich. Plenty of firms out there willing to attach their names to the brand.

Chelsea were absolutely nowhere before the project started. Even in England. No one outside UK had heard of them. The fact that Chelsea even have an international profile now is amazing enough.

its cute how some utd fans use their opinion as facts:
Luke shaw: "we are a bigger draw for players who wants to play for the club that pays them more"-The draw of London, Most recent European Champions, Currently in Europe and can pay as much as utd will be just as much a draw imo as utd.

And gillespie road whoever he supports:"The fact that they're yet to leverage their global profile and Roman's largesse into a new stadium, should be of great concern to the old-timers."

Were probably the biggest team in Africa and up there in asia and America from what I have been told and seen. And with terms of stadium we still hit the 4th or so highest revenue every weekend at home.

I was pondering these thoughts as well cleverson. Chelsea have spent in excess of a billion pounds and have as many PL titles as Wenger at Arsenal

Well we won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1998 with Zola scoring a lovely goal in the Final.

Pre-Roman we also played in the Champions League with some memorable nights including beating Barca at Stamford Bridge.

Oh and we also smashed Utd 5-0 in the Premiership in 1999, a match that was no doubt seen and replayed around Europe.

So yes I think that a few outside the UK would have heard of us

just read that future of orange guys post, I went to America and Canada as a teenager and everyone had heard of chelsea,

people seem to forget we won stuff in the 50s and 70s and then late 90/early 2000s we was always in europe, won a european trophy and super cup, won a few fa cups and league cups and was finishing top 3/4 in the league.

people talk about history and stuff but very rarely remember it themselves.

It's quite embarrassing really when you consider that they have effectively been given a blank cheque book and yet still find themselves behind the likes of villa and sheff Wednesday in terms of titles.
