I used to live it VC, do not need to see reality shows.
Some states like California have got their officers wearing cameras and it helps a lot.
We need to be careful and not generalise. There are some phenomenal police officers and there are bad ones. The bad ones need to be rooted out.
None of us would get away with some of the stuff they did. We cannot have separate laws for people in one society
...........
Totally agree with that.

Innocent until proven guilty, that is what the law says. You cannot have it both ways. If you support enforcing the law, you have to support the law.

Republik, definitely agree other countries would be worse. An Argentinian coworker told me recently about life there for his cop bro in law and it is scary. I did mean in relation to developed countries. I'm not defending these cops that have done the wrong thing but feck being a cop in the US.
When the primary school shooting happened, the NRA wanted all teachers to have guns! Yeah, that'll help...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know, I was maybe being a bit pedantic about it.
I'm glad I live in the UK where the police still don't have guns in the main. I think arming the police would send out the wrong message. However in the US whilst the right to bear arms exists then all police will need to be armed.
There is definitely a cultural element to it though. There are plenty of countries where owning a firearm is legal and many citizens do own them, but there is much less related gun crime and murder. Canada is only one example but I believe there are others, including Switzerland.

I think the Swiss all have guns after compulsory military service and most Canadians that have guns, have them from/for hunting. Both require some form of training certification as far as I'm aware.
In the US guns are for whoever wants one.

I am glad I live in Oklahoma...I live in one of the safest States in the US due to my open carry gun law. We have a right to defend ourselves and property...remember guns don't kill people, people kill people. A criminal will always find a way to get a firearm, so why not have the means to defend yourself incase the police don't arrive.
Anyway, as for the riots, it's absolutely disgusting and it's a shame the national guard can't go in there and simply mow those b'stards down. These rioters are a stain on my country.

This was a great post. I really enjoyed reading it. It's about as cliched as you can get.

Yep totally safe. You have a population in your state of about 3.7 mil and had 111 gun deaths in 2010.
That's more than in the whole of the UK with a population of approx 64 million. I know where I would feel safer.

Poolmyfinger;
I will never understand why people don't see that like attracts like. That violence perpetrates more violence.
The gun laws in America are stupid pure and simple. Legalising lethal force is stupid.
In Dunblane here there was a tragedy. What did we do? Ban guns.
Similar tragedies in America? Well we need more guns to stop that. Absolute madness and quite frankly not the act of an enlightened society.
There are deeper issues but if people can't see that the "force" employed to "serve and protect" shouldn't be going round breaking necks is exactly just that then they need to sort themselves out.
It's just wrong.

No, a hard-core criminal with some serious intent will always find a way to get hold of a gun; make it easy to get a gun and make it normal to carry a gun and any wannabe gangster or hormonal kid can get one with ease.
No, guns are an inanimate object.

You may well be correct TKT but I imagine America has a lot of firearms for hunting purposes etc. as well. It's slightly skewed stats when these are taken into account and I suppose you should look at gun ownership in the form of handguns and semi automatic guns.
I've always had a secret desire to sit out in front of my house with a shotgun shouting "git the hell off my property you b%stards" in a duke's of hazzard accent.

I own two handguns and keep them stored here at my house and will have no problem shooting someone if someone was trying to break into my house. It's a wonderful thing because calling the police may take 5 minutes for someone to arrive which is enough time for them to murder me. So having the firearm available allows me to protect myself and my family.

Yeah, and if the burglar draws quicker you're fúcked. Because let's face it, he'll probably have a gun too.
Poolmyfinger;
Have you been burgled?
Know anyone who has been burgled?
