Darren i think Jose has signed some decent defenders in his time plus didn't he get rid of luiz

In a backs to the wall type of game that's a fair point, Kaiser.

England will have to play like that against the bigger nations at the Euros. Still don't rate Jones, though.

I don't think people underestimate Jones' ability, but i think his effectiveness is very underrated.

Sure it's based on pure physical strength and size, but it does work. Not all that is effective is samba.

So did Fergie.

Point is that just because a top manager wants a player doesn't mean they are a top player.

True but a top manager isn't gonna pursue a defender who, to paraphrase your description, has spent the last 2 seasons running after pl forwards. You say he isnt a good defender but could probably do well in joses bus which by its definition is a defensive set up.

Tell you what utd were strangely quiet this summer regarding stones when the concensus was a cb was needed I wouldn't be surprised to see the club make a move for him next summer

Especially if he starts catching those pl strikers you say he's running after

So Mourinho trying to buy Stones doesn't mean Stones has been playing amazing for the last two seasons. Defensively he's not that good**

I think we've discussed this before tbh, unless you also have a season ticket at Everton I dont think you are best placed to comment on John Stones

Jones is a tricky one, I think what people liked about him when he was at Blackburn was his gung ho approach that many said was reminiscent of Terry, difference being Terry was actually much more than just a kamikaze defender who would put his head where others would be scared to put their feet.

I think Jones has talent and he's shown the odd glimpse of that at United but more often than not in midfield where he can fully utilise his energy levels and run around the pitch chasing the ball. But he definitely needs to start showing signs of improvement and learning that getting injured every other week is never going to help.

And that ultimately is Jones' biggest issue, the fact he seems to get injured all the f-cking time but this is largely due to the way he plays. You could say it just needs controlling but you lessen that physical nature of his game and he doesn't have that much else.

Also Smalling is a better defender than Stones. People are being fooled by the elegance Stones shows for someone so young but defensively he hasn't actually been that great for over a year. Smalling's issue apart from not getting regular football I feel was that being brought up in non-league football he didn't get the high level training virtually all top players do at that age so he's playing catch up in that respect but his natural ability as a defender isn't in doubt and he's doing great.

All hail Mike.

I think the United fans are trying to paper over the cracks in their side by talking up Smalling to silly propertions here, he's suddenly become a brilliant defender ,

posted on 2/9/15

yeah

We have the best defence in the PL since November. Of course de Gea was a large reason for that but Smalling has been excellent. The more defensive system we are currently playing also lends itself to the defenders, much like how Jose's system last season did.

For years fans have been saying to give Smalling a run in the side and since he has he has proved to be more than capable. After Benatia was being raved about after 1 great season at Roma and Otamendi for 1 season at Valencia I wonder how Smalling's recent form has effected his reputation round the world?

Apart from the injurys I think Jones has suffered more than most from the departure of fergie who it seems was the only one to get the best out of him

Well, has anyone showed any interest in him?

Considering he's the main CB for one of the biggest clubs in the world I think that's kind of irrelevant isn't it as we aren't going to sell.

Not really a barometer on how good a utd player is

You wondered if his recent form had affected his reputation around the world so yeah I think its a fair question?

Smalling is nearly 26.

Sure that's not old, but he can't really be classed as a 'young' defender anymore. He should be playing at a high level and it starting to. Not convinced about him at the highest level however.

Stones is just starting out, on what I have seen (which isn't much), he's well overrated, but at his age he can improve a lot with games and good coaching and Mourinho will be a far better coach for him than Martinez.

Jones is just bilge. Thank feck we missed out on him or that would have been yet another woeful signing this decade.

I didnt say you should sell him

So you're saying none of them then thanks for that...... can we put Lovren in the list to cheer Righteous up

Unless you have a season ticket you can't comment on Smalling.

Everton fans really overrate their players on here as well.

Ross Barkley and John Stones chief among them.

fair enough, so are you over-rating Smalling then or is it just us Evertonians that do that

posted on 2/9/15

No I'm saying it's a crap argument.

But you think Smalling is the best

posted on 2/9/15

To be fair Smalling has been around years for club and country.

Stones has not and I'm genuinely surprised so many watch Everton.

posted on 2/9/15

Yeah because he can defend better than him.

Robbing, Stones isn't playing for Barnsley anymore.

Everton are on a lot and he's also played for England and the under 21's. Plus we can see his mistakes on motd.

There are plenty of season ticket holders that go to games and don't know what the fack they are talking about.
